The Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) is being completely redeveloped, with a new medical college that will have room for 250 students every year, 644 faculty residence, a heliport, and an extra 1,150 beds. The INR 5,544 crore project, initiated in 2018 with the Bihar cabinet's approval, will double PMCH to become a 5,462-bed hospital. After completion, it will be the second-largest hospital in the world by capacity.

Set up in 1925, PMCH is among India's oldest medical facilities and a key provider of healthcare services in Bihar. It has traditionally served patients from all over the state and bordering areas. Overcrowding and dilapidation had been major concerns for a long time, prompting several debates regarding redevelopment. The Bihar government formally sanctioned the existing expansion proposal in 2018 to update facilities and enhance healthcare services.

Discussing the project, Dr. Indrashekhar Thakur, PMCH medical superintendent, told reporters that the construction will take place in phases by L&T Realty. The first phase which includes construction of four towers is nearing completion. Once complete, the hospital will begin operations with an additional capacity of 1,150 new beds, 500 emergency beds, 500 ICU beds, 136 private rooms and 10 deluxe rooms. The new towers will also contain two exclusive VIP suites and 27 modular operation theatres. Certain outpatient departments (OPDs) such as obstetrics, gynaecology, dentistry, and ophthalmology will be shifted to the new wings.

In related real estate news, Bihar Chief Minister Shri Nitish Kumar recently inaugurated infrastructure initiatives, aimed at improving services available to citizens. Some of the initiatives include multi-level parking facilities, central utility buildings and hostels for women.

PMCH's revamp hopes to propel healthcare services in Bihar. With an increased capacity, state-of-the-art medical infrastructure, and an extensive array of OPD facilities, the hospital will be able to serve a larger number of people with better efficiency. With the first phase coming close to completion, the project represents a key milestone for Bihar's healthcare industry, promising improved accessibility and quality medical care for the future.
