Synopsis

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has allocated INR 154 crore for land acquisition along a 1.1 km stretch of Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam Road at Ganapathy to advance the metro rail project. The city corporation, in collaboration with CMRL, will conduct a land plan survey, while the revenue department will oversee acquisition. CMRL will also establish a city office. The National Highways Department has sanctioned INR 54 crore for road widening. CMRL approved INR 2 crore for surveying underground utilities. Once CMRL appoints personnel to the Coimbatore office, the project will progress faster, enhancing urban transport and easing congestion.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has earmarked INR 154 crore in the initial phase to procure land for a 1.1 km stretch along Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam Road at Ganapathy, a critical component of the metro rail expansion aimed at bolstering urban transportation. The city corporation, in coordination with CMRL officials, will soon initiate a land plan survey to facilitate the acquisition process. Concurrently, the revenue department will oversee the land acquisition proceedings. Additionally, CMRL intends to establish an office in the city, for which the civic body has agreed to allocate space.

Coimbatore MP Ganapathy P. Rajkumar and Corporation Commissioner Sivaguru Prabakaran recently convened with CMRL officials in Chennai to deliberate on the metro rail project, which will unfold in two corridors. The first corridor, spanning 20.4 km, will originate from Ukkadam bus stand and extend to the Neelambur integrated station via the city airport. The second corridor will cover 14.4 km, stretching from the city railway junction to Valiyampalayam Pirivu.

The segment between the Textool rail over-bridge and Surya Hospital on Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam Road is highly congested due to its narrow width, often leading to severe traffic bottlenecks. To address this, the National Highways wing of the State Highways Department had planned a 3.1 km road-widening initiative extending from the Textool rail over-bridge. Since the project requires land acquisition, National Highways authorities recently sanctioned INR 54 crore to facilitate this process. Given that CMRL also intends to acquire land along the same stretch for the metro rail project, conducting separate acquisitions would be inefficient.

As a result, CMRL was requested to allocate INR 154 crore in the first phase to acquire a 24-meter-wide land parcel spanning 1.1 km from the Textool flyover to Surya Hospital Junction. In response to this request, CMRL?s project management committee approved the INR 154 crore allocation on Friday. The revenue department will spearhead the land acquisition process, predominantly focusing on properties located on the eastern side of the road. Upon completion of this acquisition, the National Highways authorities will commence the road-widening initiative along the 3.1 km stretch from the Textool rail over-bridge.

Additionally, preparations for the land plan survey associated with the metro rail project will commence shortly. CMRL has sanctioned INR 2 crore for the survey, which will enable an in-depth examination of the land required for both corridors. The study will also evaluate necessary steps for relocating underground cables and water pipelines. The team will compile a comprehensive report and submit it to CMRL, which will then proceed with land acquisition based on the findings.

Sivaguru Prabakaran also confirmed that the city corporation would provide rental space for CMRL to establish its office. Once CMRL assigns staff to manage operations in Coimbatore, the execution of the project will progress more efficiently. The Coimbatore metro rail project marks a significant step toward enhancing urban mobility and reducing congestion. With strategic planning and timely execution, the initiative promises to transform the city?s transportation landscape, fostering seamless connectivity and economic growth.
