Tamil Nadu: Residents of seven villages in Trichy oppose merger with corporation

#Law & Policy#India#Tamil Nadu
Synopsis

Residents and political representatives from seven villages proposed for merger with Trichy Corporation have expressed strong opposition to the plan at the grama sabha meetings held on Republic Day. The expansion, which will increase Trichy Corporation's wards from 65 to 100, has sparked protests in several villages, citing concerns over the impact on agriculture and allied activities. These protests include resolutions passed in seven villages and threats to surrender Aadhaar and ration cards. Police have classified a significant number of meetings as sensitive.

Residents and political representatives from seven villages, proposed for inclusion in the expanded Trichy Corporation, recently passed resolutions opposing the merger during grama sabha meetings held in connection with Republic Day. Earlier, the municipal administration department issued a government order approving the expansion of Trichy Corporation, which will see its existing 65 wards increase to 100. This expansion plan includes the addition of 22 village panchayats, such as Navalpattu and Kumbakudi, with some areas being partially incorporated.

Villagers have voiced concerns that the merger would negatively affect agricultural activities and schemes like MGNREGA. In particular, they argue that their livelihoods, which are closely tied to these sectors, could be compromised. As a result, protests have erupted against the merger, with the resolutions being passed in Adavathur, Punganur, Kumara Vayalur, Nerunjalakudi, Appadurai, Valadi, and K Kallikudi villages.

A DMK functionary from Nerunjalakudi shared anonymously that the villagers threatened to surrender their Aadhaar cards and ration cards if their panchayat was added to the city despite their strong opposition. Notably, Nerunjalakudi village is situated closer to the Lalgudi municipality, rather than Trichy city, which adds to the residents' concerns.

In the past, villagers had requested that block development officers (BDOs) of the panchayats participate in the grama sabha meetings, instead of the usual panchayat secretaries and deputy BDOs, in order to make their opposition to the expansion plan more official. The Trichy district police have categorized 50 out of 393 grama sabha meetings as sensitive due to the unrest surrounding the expansion plan.

The residents of the seven villages remain resolute in their opposition to the proposed merger with Trichy Corporation, with their protests showing no signs of waning. The grievances centre around the fear of disruptions to agriculture and government schemes that are vital to their livelihoods. With the government's expansion plan already in motion, it remains to be seen how the authorities will respond to the growing discontent and the possibility of further escalations. The situation has garnered significant attention, with many meetings being flagged as sensitive by local police.
