The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) is constructing a new pedestrian crossing across the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) to improve access to the Aarey-JVLR Metro station on Line 3. Phase I of the Metro 3 corridor, connecting Aarey to BKC, opened this month with an average ridership of 22,000 daily. Safety concerns arose due to a lack of pedestrian pathways, prompting MMRC to install blinker signals, rumble strips, and nearby bus stops for last-mile connectivity. Track laying for the 21 km BKC-Cuffe Parade Phase II section is complete, with 88% overall project progress. Metro 3, once fully operational, will enhance Mumbai's connectivity through vital interchanges and improved accessibility.
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has announced the construction of a new pedestrian crossing across Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) to improve accessibility for commuters using the Aarey-JVLR station on Metro Line 3. Phase I of the Metro 3 corridor, which stretches between BKC and Aarey-JVLR, was opened for commuters earlier this month. However, the absence of a proper pedestrian pathway has made it challenging for travellers to reach the nearest bus stop. Commuters have been forced to navigate oncoming traffic, including SUVs and heavy vehicles like buses, dump trucks, and cement mixers, raising serious safety concerns.
To address these issues, MMRC shared on social media that they had installed a pedestrian blinker signal, along with cat's eyes and rumble strips, to ensure vehicles yield to pedestrians for their safety. As part of its initiative to improve last-mile connectivity for Metro 3 passengers, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has introduced new bus stops near the Aarey-JVLR station. These stops will serve several routes, including C-60, 307, 403 Ltd, 425, and 428.
In other developments, the track laying for both up and down lines of the BKC-Cuffe Parade section of Metro 3 has been completed. This 21km section forms Phase II of the project and is expected to be commissioned before the next monsoon season. However, challenges remain, particularly at Acharya Atre Chowk, where ongoing utility work has caused some delays. The 12.5km-long Phase I corridor, which connects Aarey to BKC, which became operational earlier this month has an average ridership of 22,000 per day.
According to an article published by TOI, MMRC recently completed 100% track laying for the Metro 3 project, marking a significant milestone in the progress towards full commissioning. Phase II of the project is 88% complete, with station and tunnel construction finished. The underground stations at Kalbadevi and Girgaum, however, have faced delays due to the dense population, heritage structures, narrow roads, and old buildings in these areas. Metro 3 will provide vital interchanges with the suburban train network at key stations including Churchgate, CSMT, Mumbai Central, and Mahalaxmi, and will run close to major railway stations like Charni Road, Grant Road, and Dadar.
In conclusion, with the track laying for Phase II complete and safety measures in place for commuters, Metro 3 is progressing steadily. Once finished, it will significantly improve connectivity across Mumbai, providing vital interchanges with the suburban train network and enhanced last-mile access for passengers.
