Synopsis

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is preparing to acquire land on Avinashi Road and Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam Road by March 2025 for its metro rail project. The first phase, covering a 34.8 km stretch, will have two corridors, connecting key locations in Coimbatore. The project is expected to be completed in three years. The metro will feature three-coach trains, capable of accommodating over 700 passengers. CMRL is aiming for minimal land acquisition by constructing elevated corridors, with plans for future extensions. The project is being developed in collaboration with local bodies and railway authorities.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is preparing for land acquisition on Avinashi Road and Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam Road by March 2025 for the metro rail project. M A Siddique, the managing director of CMRL, expressed hope that the Union government would soon approve metro rail projects for Coimbatore and Madurai. The notification for land acquisition is expected to be issued soon. Siddique mentioned that once approval from the Union government is obtained, the process of land acquisition will begin, with the project scheduled to be completed within three years of starting.

He outlined that the metro trains will have three coaches, which are expected to serve the city for the next 40 to 50 years. Each train will be capable of carrying over 700 passengers at a time. In the first phase of the project, metro infrastructure will be set up along two corridors: Corridor-I will stretch 20.4 kilometres, connecting Ukkadam bus stand to Neelambur integrated station, passing through the airport. Corridor-II will cover 14.4 kilometres, linking Coimbatore Railway Junction to Valiyampalayam Pirivu.

Siddique further explained that the metro rail track will cover a total of 34.8 kilometres in the first phase. A significant portion of this, 10 hectares of land, will be acquired specifically for these two corridors. The land acquisition process is expected to take 1.5 to 2 years, with preliminary work already underway. Landowners will soon receive notifications regarding this process.

The project will feature an elevated metro corridor, with CMRL working to minimise the land required for acquisition. The plan includes constructing pillars along the service road on Avinashi Road, from Anna Statue to Neelambur, with pillars placed every 30 metres. The metro will take a U-turn at Neelambur before heading towards the airport. In the future, CMRL plans to extend Corridor-I to L&T bypass road from Neelambur. The metro project will also cover Mettupalayam Road and Trichy Road in due course.

Collaboration with local bodies and railway authorities will be crucial to the project's success. Siddique highlighted that the metro system would be integrated with major public transport systems like bus stands, railway stations, and airports, enhancing the overall connectivity. Some adjustments will be made to the detailed project report to ensure that the project serves the broader community's needs.

Additionally, the CMRL plans to work closely with the National Highways department on the Sathyamangalam Road stretch. The NH department intends to build a flyover at Saravanampatti, and as a result, the metro will operate at ground level (level-I) until Saravanampatti. Once the metro reaches the flyover area, it will operate above it (level-II). For Corridor-II, pillars will be constructed in the centre of the Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam Road.

Throughout the entire Avinashi Road stretch, the metro will operate at level-II. Every metro station will be equipped with lifts and escalators for accessibility. Siddique mentioned that the metro rail project in Coimbatore is expected to be completed ahead of the Madurai metro rail project.

The Coimbatore metro rail project, spearheaded by CMRL, is set to transform the city's transport infrastructure. With land acquisition starting in March 2025, the project is on track for completion within three years. The first phase, covering 34.8 km across two corridors, promises to provide a modern and efficient transport solution, benefiting the city for decades. Integration with other public transport systems and future extensions further highlight the project's potential impact on Coimbatore's urban mobility, setting the stage for similar developments in Madurai.
