Ludhiana's civic authorities are racing to complete Smart City Mission projects before the March 2025 deadline, but key initiatives face delays. The INR 8.8 crore Nehru Rose Garden revamp, featuring landscaping, open gyms, and fancy lighting, remains in its tendering stage, with a mini zoo plan awaiting approval. Ludhiana's civic authorities are racing against time to complete pending projects under the Smart City Mission by the March 2025 deadline set by the central government. However, several key projects, including the transformation of Nehru Rose Garden and the construction of bridges on Sidhwan Canal and Buddha Dariya, are yet to make substantial progress, raising concerns about their timely completion. The Nehru Rose Garden project, valued at INR 8.8 crore, aims to revamp the popular public space with new amenities such as fancy lights, an open gym, kids' play area, and improved landscaping. The plan also includes planting 91 varieties of flowers and fruit trees. While tenders have been floated for the facelift, the process is still at an early stage. A proposal to develop a mini zoo within the garden remains stuck due to pending approvals.
Similarly, the construction of two major bridges-one on Sidhwan Canal (INR 11.96 crore) and another on Buddha Dariya (INR 2 crore)-has been delayed. The first round of tenders failed due to a lack of qualified bidders, forcing the Municipal Corporation to reissue tenders. These bridges are critical to easing traffic congestion in Ludhiana's inner areas, but their construction is now in doubt, given the tight timeline.
Officials have acknowledged that while funds for these projects have been allocated under the Smart City Mission, procedural delays and technical challenges have slowed progress. The Sidhwan Canal bridge, in particular, faced setbacks when earlier proposals were questioned by the Chandigarh headquarters. Only one tender, for a bridge in the east constituency, has moved forward, but work remains in its early stages.
With the March 2025 deadline looming, residents and officials alike are questioning whether these ambitious projects can be completed in time. The delays highlight the challenges of executing large-scale urban development initiatives, including tendering issues, bureaucratic hurdles, and technical constraints. As Ludhiana works to deliver on its Smart City promises, the focus remains on expediting these critical infrastructure projects to improve the city's connectivity and public spaces.
