The Tambaram and Avadi corporations, located near Chennai, are poised to expand their boundaries by integrating 37 village panchayats. Specifically, the Tambaram Corporation will welcome 18 villages into its fold, which include Agaramthen, Medavakkam, Kovilambakkam, Cowl Bazaar, Mudichur, Perumbakkam, Nanmangalam, Pozhichalur, Tirusulam, Ottiyambakkam, Thiruvanchery, Vengaivasal, Madurapakkam, Moovarasampattu, and Sithalapakkam.

Founded in 2021, the Tambaram Corporation is set to expand its area from 84.7 square kilometres to 172.34 square kilometres, making it roughly one-fourth the size of the Greater Chennai Corporation. This merger will boost its population from 723,017 to 1,008,473. Deputy Mayor G. Kamaraj announced that the government has greenlit the proposal from the Chengalpet district administration to incorporate the panchayats that were initially left out during the establishment of the corporation, a decision attributed to the 2019 rural local body elections.

For the Avadi Corporation, three municipalities—Tiruverkadu, Poonamallee, and Tirunindravur—will be amalgamated along with 19 village panchayats. These panchayats include Vanagaram, Ayapakkam, Nemilichery, Adayalampattu, Nadukuthagai, Kattupakkam, Senneerkuppam, Varadharajapuram, Nazarethpet, Agaram Mel, Panaveetu Thottam, Parivakkam, Kannapalayam, Sorancheri, Morai, Vellanur, Palavedu, and Meppur. This consolidation will broaden the Avadi Corporation’s area from 65 square kilometres to 188 square kilometres, while its population will rise from 345,996 to 695,212. D. Karthikeyan, the secretary of the municipal administration and water supply department, stated that the village panchayat presidents will serve until the end of 2024, after which these panchayats will be integrated into the Tambaram and Avadi Corporations. The transformation is anticipated to be completed by December 2024 or January 2025.

In conclusion, the expansion of the Tambaram and Avadi corporations marks a significant step towards improving local governance and infrastructure in the region. By incorporating additional villages and municipalities, these corporations aim to enhance service delivery and address the growing needs of their populations. The planned changes, set for completion by the end of 2024 or early 2025, reflect the government's commitment to inclusive development and the betterment of urban living standards in Chennai's outskirts. As these transformations unfold, they promise to reshape the administrative landscape and foster community growth.
