Around 2,000 residents of Sanganer colonies march in Jaipur over housing security amid land acquisition dispute

12 Mar 2026

Nearly 2,000 residents from about 87 colonies in Sanganer, Jaipur, organised a protest march in the past week expressing concern over the legal status of their homes following land acquisition by the Rajasthan Housing Board. Residents said thousands of families had purchased plots through cooperative societies and constructed houses over the years, supported by bank loans and local infrastructure development. The land was later included in an acquisition process by the housing board, creating uncertainty over ownership for approximately 15,000 houses built in the area. The demonstration, led by the Niyaman Hetu Sangharsh Samiti, sought government intervention to safeguard existing homes and explore solutions such as regularisation or de-acquisition of the land. Protest organisers indicated that the agitation could intensify if the state government does not respond to their demands for clarity and legal protection.Read more

The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has approved an amendment to the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code that allows uncultivated grazing land, known as gairan land, within municipal areas to be used for public infrastructure projects. The state government said the change could make nearly 7,700 hectares of such land available for development, mainly in municipalities and smaller towns that face land shortages for civic works. The bill limits the use of these lands strictly to public purposes and bars commercial exploitation. District collectors will supervise allocation, while measurement and removal of encroachments will be completed before any project begins.Read more

Haryana plans waste-to-energy plants in major cities as environmental groups raise concerns over pollution risks

11 Mar 2026

The Haryana government has initiated plans to develop waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities in several major cities as part of efforts to improve municipal solid waste management and reduce reliance on landfill dumping. The Urban Local Bodies (ULB) department has constituted a committee to prepare a model request for proposal (RFP) and assess project feasibility in cities including Gurugram, Faridabad and Hisar. The panel has been tasked with identifying potential project sites, estimating waste generation and preparing frameworks for public-private partnership (PPP) implementation. The initiative is aligned with broader waste management efforts under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban). However, environmental groups and waste management experts have raised concerns over the environmental impact of incineration-based plants and have argued that the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 prioritise waste segregation, recycling and composting before considering energy recovery technologies.Read more
