Southern Railway is set to revamp the retiring rooms and dormitories at MGR Chennai Central station with a star-hotel-style makeover aimed at offering passengers a more comfortable short-stay experience. The station's existing facilities including nine air-conditioned rooms, a 23-bed male dormitory and a five-bed female dormitory at the concourse level will be modernised, and unused space will be developed to enhance premium stay options. The project will be executed under a renovate, operate, maintain, and transfer (ROMT) model, with management outsourced to a hospitality-experienced agency through an open tender. The upgraded facilities are intended to meet contemporary comfort standards for travellers arriving early, departing late, or in transit, while retaining convenient access to commercial amenities and platforms.Read more

Four significant sewage treatment plants under Namami Gange Phase II have become operational in Uttar Pradesh, strengthening wastewater management in cities along the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. Two plants in Agra, one in Varanasi and one in Unnao's Shuklagunj collectively serve over 46 lakh residents. The Agra plants cost INR 842 crore, Varanasi's 308 crore and Unnao's 65 crore. These STPs form part of ongoing efforts to expand sewerage infrastructure, reduce untreated sewage discharge into rivers, and improve sanitation and public health outcomes in urban areas.Read more

The Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) has proposed a coastal passenger ferry service connecting Mangaluru to Maravanthe in Udupi district, covering around 110 km along the Arabian Sea coast. The plan includes jetties at Old Mangaluru Port, Hejmadi, Malpe, Kota, and Maravanthe, aiming to reduce congestion on NH66 and support regional tourism. Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru is preparing for significant international expansion in 2026 following strong performance in 2025. Passenger traffic reached 43.82 million, up from 40.73 million in 2024, while international departures rose from 38 to 51 daily flights, a 28.7 percent increase. The airport added five domestic and five international routes, expanded airline services, and saw cargo volumes grow 5 percent to 520,985 metric tonnes. Under PRAGATI, national projects worth over INR 86 lakh crore and 65 major projects in Uttar Pradesh have been closely tracked, with high resolution rates for inter-agency issues. The Trichy municipal administration has begun foundation work for a new satellite bus terminus at Thiruverumbur to ease congestion on the Trichy Thanjavur National Highway and improve city connectivity. Spread over one acre, the facility will initially serve city buses and later accommodate mofussil services. It will have organised bus bays, 16 commercial outlets, and a paved area of around 2,430 square metres. The project, funded with INR 6.2 crore, aims to serve five newly added city wards and neighbouring panchayats, strengthening regional transit infrastructure by mid 2027.Read more

Since the Bairabi Sairang railway line began operations last September, more than 22,500 Inner Line Permits (ILPs) have been issued at Mizoram's Sairang station. The permits, required for Indian citizens and non-indigenous visitors entering protected areas, were mostly granted to tourists, traders, migrant workers, and professionals. Daily, around 400 permits are processed as two passenger trains arrive at the station. Most visitors come from Assam, Delhi, West Bengal, and southern states. Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), India's largest container port, is set to be connected to the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) by the end of March 2026. The final 102 km JNPT Vaitarna section, forming the last mile, is in advanced stages of completion. This connection will allow freight from JNPT to move directly on dedicated freight routes, reducing reliance on conventional rail, cutting transit time, and easing congestion. The 213 kilometre Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor is nearing completion and is expected to open for traffic shortly after the first week of February. The project, costing around INR 11,000 crore, has been adjusted to meet local requirements, including raising road height at one underpass for overloaded tractors and adding a new interchange following public protests. More than 99% of construction is done, and finishing touches, such as rest stops, amenities, and toll plazas, are being applied.
