Synopsis

The Trichy municipal administration has begun foundation work for a new satellite bus terminus at Thiruverumbur to ease congestion on the Trichy Thanjavur National Highway and improve city connectivity. Spread over one acre, the facility will initially serve city buses and later accommodate mofussil services. It will have organised bus bays, 16 commercial outlets, and a paved area of around 2,430 square metres. The project, funded with INR 6.2 crore, aims to serve five newly added city wards and neighbouring panchayats, strengthening regional transit infrastructure by mid 2027.

Municipal administration minister K. N. Nehru and school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi oversaw the start of foundation work for the Thiruverumbur satellite bus terminus at the old union office complex. The project is part of Trichy's broader plan to upgrade its transport infrastructure and reduce congestion along the Trichy Thanjavur National Highway, where buses currently stop on narrow service roads, causing traffic delays and commuter inconvenience.

The terminus, being developed on nearly one acre of land, will accommodate up to 10 buses simultaneously and feature 16 commercial outlets for passengers. Organised bus bays will cover a paved area of approximately 2,430 square metres, replacing the existing informal stops along the highway. City buses will operate from the terminus initially, while mofussil services will be introduced later to provide better regional connectivity and reduce pressure on other city terminuses.

Officials highlighted that the terminus will benefit residents of five newly added city wards in the Thiruverumbur zone and adjoining rural panchayats. By consolidating bus operations at a dedicated facility, the city aims to improve commuter safety, reduce roadside congestion, and streamline passenger boarding and alighting. Currently, several buses use makeshift stops along the highway, which disrupt traffic flow and pose challenges during peak hours.

The civic body had previously allocated INR 6.2 crore for the project and paid INR 2.5 crore to acquire nearly one acre of land for the terminus. This facility is the fifth major bus terminus in Trichy and the second designated as a satellite hub, following Srirangam. With a structured layout including commercial spaces, the terminus is expected to enhance commuter convenience and support citywide mobility as demand rises.

The Thiruverumbur satellite bus terminus is planned for completion by mid 2027, aligning with ongoing infrastructure development in the city. Officials indicate that the facility will integrate with existing transport services, allowing smoother operations for both intra city and long-distance travel. This development reflects the city's effort to manage traffic growth and improve public transport efficiency ahead of increasing urban travel requirements.
