G Square Group has acquired a 5-acre heritage land parcel in the heart of Madurai from the legacy owners of the TVS Group, marking one of the city's most notable real estate transactions in recent years. The land, originally owned by the late T. V. Sundaram Iyengar, founder of the TVS Group, is believed to be the group's first landholding in Madurai, lending it significant historical and cultural value. The developer plans to transform the site into a premium residential and commercial plotted project named G Square Temple View Square, located near the Periyar Bus Stand and the Meenakshi Amman Temple. The Madurai railway division has reported strong operational performance and financial results for the year to the end of December, achieving high punctuality rates and increased earnings, officials said. The division operated a large number of mail, express and passenger trains with punctuality exceeding 97 per cent, ranking it among the top performing divisions in the national network. Total revenue reached approximately INR 1,026 crore, reflecting growth across passenger, freight and non-fare segments. The division served tens of millions of passengers during the period and operated special trains to meet peak travel demand. Significant infrastructure works, including track renewals, level crossing eliminations and redevelopment of major stations, were highlighted as part of ongoing improvements. Residents of the Melavasal Housing Board complex in Madurai have staged a protest, expressing their dissatisfaction with the maintenance of the housing complex by the Madurai Corporation. The Madurai City Corporation has significantly improved its ranking in property tax collection, moving from 16th to 11th place among 20 corporations in the state during the first half of the year. Officials report that the monthly average of total tax and non-tax revenue collection has increased from '32 crore in 2022-23 to '38 crore this year, with '138 crore collected by August. Notably, '90 crores have been collected as property tax in the first five months of the financial year, surpassing the previous year's total of '156 crore.
