The Madurai railway division has reported robust operational and financial performance up to the end of December, with officials citing high punctuality and increased earnings as key outcomes of concerted efforts on both service delivery and infrastructure enhancement.
According to a statement from divisional authorities, the division operated a substantial number of mail and express trains, achieving a punctuality rate of over 97 per cent for those services. Passenger trains also recorded high on-time performance, contributing to the division's standing as one of the most reliable in the Indian Railways network. The divisional railway manager noted that this operational efficiency reflects improved scheduling, real-time coordination and systematic execution across services.
For the current financial year up to December, the division reported total earnings of around INR 1,026 crore, representing a notable increase over the corresponding period of the previous year. Passenger revenue accounted for the largest share, followed by freight revenue and income from sundry sources, including non-fare streams. Officials highlighted a significant rise in non-fare revenue, underscoring diversification of income alongside core transport operations. The division transported nearly 37 million passengers during this period and operated close to 900 special trains to address peak travel requirements.
Operational improvements have been supported by infrastructure projects and maintenance activities. These included complete renewal of 63 km of track, deep screening of over 118 km of track and elimination of level crossings through the construction of subways, all aimed at enhancing safety and service reliability. Major station redevelopment projects at Madurai, Rameswaram and Tirunelveli are under way, with several Amrit Bharat stations completed and ready for inauguration. Full electrification of the Ramanathapuram-Rameswaram section has also been achieved, further strengthening network capabilities.
In addition to passenger and freight services, the division was noted for strong performance in freight train speed, ranking first among Indian Railways divisions. This reflects continued efforts to improve operational efficiency and logistics performance. The combination of high punctuality, revenue growth and infrastructure progress underscores the division's focus on delivering reliable transport services while advancing key development initiatives.
