A seminar called MDU Raising is set to bring together business leaders, civic officials, and activists to evaluate Madurai's ongoing and proposed development projects under the Madurai Master Plan. Discussions will focus on urban infrastructure, industrial clusters, mobility, environmental concerns, and water management initiatives, including Vaigai river restoration. Officials and industry representatives aim to identify gaps in current projects and explore strategies to strengthen trade, tourism, and sustainable growth. The event underscores the need for coordinated efforts to realise Madurai's potential as a regional economic hub.
The MDU Raising seminar is scheduled to take place at the Agro Food Trade Centre (AFTC) campus in Sikandar Chavadi, Madurai. Organised by the Agri and All Trade Chamber along with its platform You Export (YE), the seminar aims to assess the city's ongoing development initiatives and the proposals outlined in the Madurai Master Plan.
S. Rethinavelu, president of the chamber, explained that the seminar will review projects already implemented in the city and deliberate on those planned for the future. He said the discussions are intended to engage the Tamil Nadu government and the Madurai Corporation, encouraging focused attention on infrastructure, industry, trade, tourism, and water management to enhance the city's growth.
Rethinavelu highlighted that the Master Plan's proposals for industrial cluster zones and dedicated pathways for non-motorised transport are significant steps towards reducing traffic congestion and improving urban mobility. The vision, he added, is to transform Madurai into a clean and modern city with robust infrastructure, promoting a balance between economic growth and sustainability.
Despite multiple projects undertaken in recent years, Rethinavelu noted that Madurai, as a gateway to Southern Tamil Nadu, has not fully realised its growth potential. The seminar seeks to address these concerns by identifying gaps in current initiatives and suggesting actionable measures for more effective implementation.
The seminar will see participation from key officials, including Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan and representatives from the state highways department. Activists and experts from the Vaigai river restoration initiative will also join, highlighting environmental and water management challenges. The discussions are expected to provide insights on integrating sustainable development with urban expansion plans.
Attendees will discuss ways to strengthen industrial activity, enhance trade and exports, and boost tourism while ensuring that infrastructure projects align with long-term urban planning goals. By engaging government authorities, civic leaders, and private sector participants, the seminar aims to facilitate a coordinated approach to Madurai's development.
Through this platform, stakeholders hope to align resources, streamline project execution, and ensure that ongoing initiatives under the Madurai Master Plan contribute effectively to the city's overall growth.
