The Maharashtra registration department has allowed tenant agreements to be registered at any sub-registrar office within a district, removing the earlier taluka-based restriction. Karnataka has amended its Rent Control Act, 1999, decriminalizing rental disputes while introducing steep fines for violations such as unauthorized subletting, illegal eviction, and failure to register real estate agents. Real estate agents not registering with rent controllers are now liable for daily fines.
