Construction of Mumbai's Orange Gate-Marine Drive twin tunnel has commenced, targeting completion by June 2028, six months ahead of schedule. The nearly 10 km corridor, with 7 km underground, will run beneath about 700 buildings, including heritage and residential structures, and two major railway lines. Designed to reduce travel time to 5-7 minutes and provide a direct link to Navi Mumbai Airport, the project features advanced safety systems, a 12.2 metre TBM, and cross-passages every 300 metres. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has virtually launched India's first all-electric green tug, a major milestone in the country's push for cleaner maritime operations. Built for the Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla, the tug is part of the Green Tug Transition Programme, which aims to cut emissions across the shipping sector. The vessel will offer a 60-ton bollard pull, zero-carbon operations, silent performance and higher energy efficiency. Under the programme, 50 green tugs are planned by 2030, with 16 to be deployed between 2024 and 2027. BEML has received a fresh INR 414 crore contract from Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd for supplying additional trainsets required for Phase II of the Bengaluru Metro project. This follows an earlier INR 405 crore contract from BMRCL for seven additional trains under the same phase. Adani Group has outlined an investment plan of around USD 15 billion to raise its airport network's combined annual capacity to nearly 200 million passengers. The plan includes new terminals, additional airside infrastructure and major upgrades across airports in Navi Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Thiruvananthapuram, Lucknow and Guwahati. NHAI has partnered with Reliance Jio to introduce a mobile-based safety alert system for national highways, designed to warn commuters about accident-prone stretches, fog zones, stray cattle areas and diversions. The alerts will reach users through SMS, WhatsApp and priority calls, supported by Jio's 4G and 5G network. The system will also connect with NHAI's Rajmargyatra app and the 1033 helpline. The MMRDA has started constructing the 13.9 km Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension, a six?lane elevated corridor linking Anand Nagar in Thane to Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar. The corridor will pass through key suburbs, merge with existing elevated roads, and provide a connection to the Samruddhi Expressway. It will feature a modern single-pier design, ramps at major junctions, and a toll plaza. Environmental measures include preserving 127 Pink Trumpet trees and planting 4,175 compensatory trees. Once completed, the freeway is expected to reduce travel time between South Mumbai and Thane to 25-30 minutes.Read more
