India launches its first all-electric green tug, boosting sustainable port operations

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has virtually launched India's first all-electric green tug, a major milestone in the country's push for cleaner maritime operations. Built for the Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla, the tug is part of the Green Tug Transition Programme, which aims to cut emissions across the shipping sector. The vessel will offer a 60-ton bollard pull, zero-carbon operations, silent performance and higher energy efficiency. Under the programme, 50 green tugs are planned by 2030, with 16 to be deployed between 2024 and 2027. Sonowal said the launch underscores India's commitment to sustainable and future-ready port infrastructure.

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) Sarbananda Sonowal virtually launched India's first all-electric green tug earlier this week, marking a significant step in the country's transition toward cleaner and more efficient maritime operations.


The tugboat, designed for the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla, is being developed under the Ministry's Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), which focuses on reducing emissions across the shipping sector.

Sonowal said the launch reflects India's growing commitment to integrating clean energy solutions in port operations, adding that this milestone strengthens the country's resolve to build a more sustainable maritime ecosystem.

The new tug will have a 60-ton bollard pull capacity, operate silently, emit zero carbon, and deliver improved energy efficiency.

The GTTP plans to induct 50 green tugs by 2030, with 16 scheduled for deployment in the first phase between 2024 and 2027, according to an official statement.
