Authorities in Raipur demolished 77 houses during an anti-encroachment drive in Nakti village near Swami Vivekananda Airport earlier this week, prompting protests from residents who claimed several homes had been built under government housing schemes and stood on ancestral land. The operation, undertaken jointly by the revenue department and the Raipur Municipal Corporation, cleared nearly nine hectares of government land that officials alleged had been under illegal occupation for years. While the administration said due legal procedures had been followed and rehabilitation had been arranged in Nava Raipur, villagers disputed the ownership claim, alleging the land was common grazing land recorded in their forefathers' names and questioning the demolition of houses constructed under state-backed housing programmes.Read more

Godawari Power and Ispat has increased its sponge iron capacity at its Raipur plant to 6.5 lakh tonnes from 5.94 lakh tonnes, with the expansion becoming operational from February 28 after regulatory approval. The plant also has a hard bright wire capacity of 1.15 lakh tonnes. Sponge iron serves as a crucial raw material for steel production in Electric Arc Furnaces and Induction Furnaces, while HB wire is used in nails, fasteners, and construction applications. Durg is undergoing a major transformation with infrastructure projects collectively exceeding INR 5,000 crore. Key among them is the 92 km Durg-Raipur-Arang Expressway under Bharatmala, set to cut travel time to Raipur to just 20 minutes by 2025. A metro feasibility study linking Raipur and Durg is also underway with a INR 5 crore allocation. Industrial growth is supported by new conveyor belt and farm equipment units, while NSPCL plans a 250 MW power addition in Bhilai. With the proposed 530 km Raipur-Hyderabad Expressway also passing through, Durg is poised to become a central industrial and transport hub in Chhattisgarh.Read more
