Synopsis

• The first phase of Pune Metro Line 3 connecting Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar is expected to begin operations by the end of June, subject to mandatory safety clearances.
• Around 12 stations on the 23.2-km elevated corridor are likely to become operational initially, while work on the remaining stations is targeted for completion later this year.
• The corridor is being developed by Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited under a public-private partnership model involving the Tata Group and Siemens.
• Officials stated that trial runs across the full route have already been completed and the project has achieved over 95 per cent physical progress.
• The metro line is expected to improve connectivity between Pune’s central business district and the Hinjewadi IT hub, where large-scale residential and commercial development has taken place in recent years.

The first phase of Pune Metro Line 3 connecting Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar is likely to commence operations by the end of June, with 12 stations expected to become operational initially on the city’s key IT corridor route.

Officials from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority stated that the rollout remains subject to mandatory approvals and safety certification from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). The corridor, spanning approximately 23.2 km, is one of Pune’s major urban mobility infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity between the city centre and the Hinjewadi technology hub.

The initial operational stretch is expected to cover stations from the Hinjewadi side up to Balewadi, while construction and finishing work at several stations closer to Shivajinagar continues simultaneously. Authorities indicated that some stations may initially operate with limited passenger access as entry, exit, and associated infrastructure works remain under progress.

According to project officials, the metro corridor has achieved more than 95 per cent physical completion and successful trial runs have already been conducted across the entire route. The remaining work primarily relates to station access infrastructure, passenger movement systems, and final operational clearances.

The full corridor comprises 23 stations and is expected to become fully operational later this year. Once completed, the line will connect directly with Pune Metro’s existing operational corridors at Shivajinagar and Civil Court stations, allowing interchange access with Line 1 and Line 2 services.

The Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar route has been developed under a public-private partnership framework through Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited, a special purpose vehicle formed by the Tata Group and Siemens. The project is regarded as India’s first metro rail corridor implemented under a PPP model.

The metro corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Pune’s central business districts and the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi, which currently experiences heavy traffic congestion during peak office hours. The route also traverses major residential and commercial growth zones including Wakad, Baner, Balewadi, and University Road, where substantial real estate development has occurred over the past decade.

Industry observers believe the phased opening of the corridor could support further residential absorption and commercial activity along Pune’s western growth belt by improving mass transit connectivity for daily commuters, particularly professionals employed within the city’s technology and business parks.
