Synopsis

• Kochi Metro Rail Ltd has revised the commissioning timeline for the Phase II Pink Line corridor, with operations now expected to begin in April 2027 instead of the earlier mid-2026 target due to delays in funding and construction work.
• The delay was mainly linked to the pending release of an INR 1,016.24 crore loan from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, which slowed civil, electrical and station-related works across multiple stretches of the project.
• The 11.2-km corridor connecting JLN Stadium and Infopark is expected to improve connectivity to Kakkanad’s IT and commercial hubs, where a large number of employees currently rely on road-based transport for daily travel.

Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has pushed the operational timeline for the Phase II Pink Line corridor to April 2027 after facing delays in funding approvals and construction activities. The metro extension was earlier expected to see partial operations begin by mid-2026 between JLN Stadium and Padamughal, but authorities have now decided to commission the entire stretch up to Infopark together in a single phase.

The revised schedule comes after delays in securing financial assistance for the project. The Kerala government had cleared the proposal for the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) loan earlier this year, allowing KMRL to move ahead with the external funding process. The project is set to receive an INR 1,016.24 crore loan from AIIB, which officials said is expected to improve construction speed in the coming months. Delays in receiving the funds had affected the pace of civil construction, viaduct work, station development and electrical systems installation across multiple sections of the corridor.

The Phase II metro corridor, commonly referred to as the Pink Line, covers 11.2 km and will connect JLN Stadium, Palarivattom, Chembumukku, Vazhakala, Kakkanad, Cochin SEZ and Infopark through 11 stations. The extension is considered one of the city’s key transport infrastructure projects as it is expected to improve connectivity to Kochi’s growing IT and business districts. Areas such as Infopark, SmartCity and Kinfra currently witness heavy daily traffic movement, with many employees depending mainly on private vehicles and buses due to limited rail-based connectivity.

According to reports, KMRL had initially planned to open the corridor in two stages. The first section between JLN Stadium and Padamughal was targeted for June 2026, while the remaining stretch to Infopark was expected to open later the same year. However, the authority later revised the strategy after construction timelines were affected by financial delays and pending works in several sections.

Apart from funding constraints, the project also witnessed delays linked to land acquisition, utility shifting and traffic management challenges along densely populated stretches of Kakkanad and Pipeline Road. Construction activities in some areas had slowed due to difficulties in relocating underground utilities and managing traffic diversions during pillar and girder installation work.

Afcons Infrastructure is executing the main civil construction package for the corridor under a contract valued at nearly INR 1,141.32 crore. Recent updates indicate that piling work has been completed across most sections, while pier and viaduct construction are progressing steadily. Work continues in stretches between JLN Stadium and Palarivattom, where several structural activities are still underway. Authorities are now aiming to complete major civil and electrical works by the end of 2026, followed by trial runs, signalling integration and safety clearances before commercial operations begin.

KMRL has also started removing barricades in certain completed stretches along the Pipeline Junction-Kakkanad route where girder installation work has been finished. This is expected to provide partial relief to motorists in some of the city’s busiest roads that have faced congestion during the ongoing metro construction. Road restoration, levelling and median works are continuing in phases alongside metro development activities.

The Kochi Metro Phase II corridor is expected to strengthen integration with the city’s existing metro network and support future urban expansion towards eastern Kochi. Over the past few years, several infrastructure projects in the city, including mobility hubs and metro extensions, have witnessed delays due to funding approvals, rising project costs and execution-related challenges. The Pink Line is also expected to support transit-oriented development in areas surrounding Kakkanad and Infopark once operations begin.
