Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has granted nearly INR 40 lakh in rebates to property owners who paid their property tax early under its ongoing incentive scheme. Around 35,948 taxpayers availed the benefit during the first few weeks of the current financial year, helping the civic body collect close to INR 11 crore in revenue.

Under the Bihar Municipal Property Tax Rules, 2013, PMC is offering a 5% rebate on the principal tax amount for residents making lump-sum payments during the first quarter of the financial year. The rebate scheme will remain valid till June 30. Civic officials said the initiative is aimed at encouraging timely payments and improving municipal revenue collection.

The corporation’s data showed that digital payments continued to dominate collections this year. Nearly 60% of taxpayers used online payment methods through the municipal portal and UPI applications such as Paytm, Google Pay and BHIM. Offline payment options including cash, cheque and demand draft remain available at zonal offices and the PMC headquarters.

Among all civic zones, Patliputra recorded the highest collection of over INR 3 crore from more than 10,000 holdings. Kankarbagh and Nutan Rajdhani zones followed in terms of collections. Bankipur zone generated around INR 1.67 crore, while Kankarbagh collected close to INR 2.39 crore during the same period.

PMC has also extended tax collection counter timings from 9 am to 7 pm daily to improve collections before the rebate deadline. In addition, the corporation has started awareness campaigns and SMS reminders for major defaulters. Officials noted that collections during the same period last year stood at around INR 13 crore from nearly 47,000 holdings, indicating comparatively slower collections this year despite the rebate benefit.

The civic body clarified that the 5% rebate will not be available after the first quarter. Property owners making payments between July and September will not receive any concession, while pending dues after October will attract a monthly interest charge of 1.5%.

The rebate scheme comes at a time when PMC has been focusing on improving tax compliance and strengthening revenue collection. In the previous financial year, the corporation had crossed its annual collection targets through recovery drives, wider tax coverage and settlement schemes for pending taxpayers. The civic body has also been expanding digital payment systems and conducting property surveys to bring more holdings under the tax network.
