IIT Madras Global is planning to launch centres in four countries by the end of this year as part of its broader strategy to strengthen international research, innovation and startup collaborations. The expansion is aimed at helping Indian deep-tech startups and researchers access global markets, industry partnerships and investment opportunities. The proposed centres are expected to come up in regions including the US, Germany, Dubai and Malaysia. IIT Madras is also focusing on technology commercialisation, applied research and international academic programmes as it looks to build a stronger global innovation network.
Indian Institute of Technology Madras is preparing to strengthen its international presence through IITM Global by setting up centres in four countries before the end of this year. The initiative is part of the institute’s long-term plan to build a wider global network for research, innovation, entrepreneurship and industry collaboration.
The proposed centres are expected to come up in the United States, Germany, Dubai and Malaysia. Through IITM Global, the institute is looking to support Indian startups, researchers and faculty members in connecting with international markets, investors and technology ecosystems. The expansion is also aimed at increasing global partnerships in areas such as deep-tech innovation, research commercialisation and advanced technology development.
The institute has indicated that the overseas centres will not function only as academic extensions but will also focus on startup incubation, technology transfer, consultancy projects and cross-border industry collaboration. Officials associated with the initiative said the expansion is being developed in phases with a focus on measurable outcomes and long-term partnerships rather than rapid scale.
IIT Madras had earlier launched the IITM Global Research Foundation with the objective of creating a stronger international innovation ecosystem around Indian research and technology. During the launch, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had stated that the initiative could help Indian institutions take their research capabilities and startup ecosystem to a wider global audience.
The institute is also planning to expand IITM Global further over the next few years. Reports indicate that nearly 15 international centres are being considered in the long term as IIT Madras looks to strengthen India’s role in deep-tech research and global innovation partnerships.
A major part of the strategy is focused on sectors including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, blockchain, sustainability, quantum computing, mobility and space technology. IIT Madras believes global exposure can help Indian startups test technologies in international markets and improve access to overseas investments and commercial partnerships.
Earlier this year, IITM Global had announced its first Applied AI Innovation Centre at Dubai CommerCity. The proposed centre is expected to support AI-focused startups and strengthen technology collaboration between India and the UAE under the CEPA framework. In the initial phase, the centre is expected to host six artificial intelligence startups with a combined valuation of around USD 118 million and projected revenues of nearly USD 281 million over the next five years.
The institute has already been increasing its international engagement through partnerships, student exchange programmes and overseas research collaborations. IIT Madras had also launched its international campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania, marking one of the first major global expansion steps by an Indian Institute of Technology.
Apart from academic collaboration, the institute is increasingly focusing on creating pathways for Indian innovations to reach global industries and markets. The planned centres are expected to help startups and researchers work closely with multinational companies, international universities and technology-focused investment networks.
