The Bihar cabinet has cleared World Bank assistance of nearly USD 500 million, equivalent to about INR 4,750 crore, for the Bihar Urban Transformation Programme. The approval was granted during a cabinet meeting held in Patna in the past week, marking a significant step in the state’s urban development strategy.
The programme is aimed at supporting planned and structured urban growth across selected cities in Bihar. It focuses on strengthening core urban infrastructure, improving civic amenities, and upgrading essential public services. The objective is to ensure more organised development as urbanisation continues to increase in the state.
Under the initiative, attention will be given to improving urban connectivity, service delivery systems, and basic infrastructure facilities. The programme is also expected to introduce better planning mechanisms for managing city expansion and addressing infrastructure gaps in urban areas.
The funding support from the World Bank is part of Bihar’s broader approach of working with international financial institutions to accelerate infrastructure development. In recent years, the state has also focused on improving road networks, expanding public transport facilities, and introducing cleaner mobility solutions in major urban centres.
Officials indicated that the urban transformation programme will help in strengthening long-term planning frameworks and improving efficiency in urban governance. It is also expected to support better coordination among departments involved in urban development and infrastructure execution.
The overall aim of the initiative is to enhance living standards in urban areas while ensuring more sustainable and planned city development across Bihar.
