Synopsis

Guwahati-based Poddar Group has announced plans to invest INR 800 crore over the next five to 10 years to expand its hospitality portfolio, with a primary focus on the Northeast. The company aims to develop 10 hospitality assets through a mix of owned, leased and acquired properties. The expansion strategy comes as the region witnesses stronger tourism demand, improved connectivity and rising appetite for premium hospitality experiences. The group also launched its second Hotel Palacio property in Guwahati and confirmed that the Hyatt Regency Gangtok project is currently under development, reflecting its broader ambition to strengthen its regional hospitality footprint.

Guwahati-based diversified conglomerate Poddar Group has unveiled plans to invest INR 800 crore over the next five to 10 years to strengthen its hospitality business, with the Northeast expected to remain the primary growth market for the company’s expansion strategy.

The investment roadmap will focus on developing 10 hospitality assets across different formats, including company-owned properties, leased assets and acquisitions. The company said it intends to adopt a flexible operating structure to support sustainable growth while capitalising on the rising tourism and business travel demand emerging across northeastern states.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati earlier this week, Poddar Group Managing Director and COO Ankit Poddar stated that the hospitality arm is pursuing a mixed expansion model to diversify its portfolio while maintaining operational flexibility. He added that although the Northeast remains central to the company’s plans, the group is also evaluating opportunities in other parts of India where market conditions and growth potential align with its long-term strategy.

According to the company, the upcoming pipeline will comprise a combination of owned developments, hotel management agreements and lease-based properties. Poddar further indicated that the group is open to acquisitions within the Northeast to accelerate its regional presence.

The announcement coincided with the launch of the group’s second Hotel Palacio property in Guwahati. Located at Paltan Bazar, the new 83-key hotel marks the continued expansion of the company’s premium hospitality brand, which was first established in 2015.

As part of the launch, the company introduced ‘Omara’, a signature restaurant developed in collaboration with celebrity chef Vicky Ratnani. The restaurant is expected to strengthen the property’s positioning within Guwahati’s premium hospitality and dining segment.

With the addition of the new hotel, the group now operates three hospitality properties, including two in Guwahati and one in Alipurduar in West Bengal. The company stated that this gradual expansion reflects its strategy of building a stronger regional footprint while responding to evolving travel and hospitality demand across eastern and northeastern India.

The group also confirmed that the Hyatt Regency Gangtok project is currently under development, which forms part of its wider effort to create a diversified hospitality portfolio spanning multiple market segments.

Poddar Group Chairman Anup Poddar stated that the company’s long-term objective is to establish Hotel Palacio as one of the most recognised hospitality brands emerging from Assam while retaining a strong connection to the region’s identity and cultural values.

He noted that the Northeast has undergone significant transformation in recent years, supported by improving infrastructure, better connectivity and changing consumer aspirations, all of which have contributed to rising demand for organised hospitality offerings.

Apart from hospitality, Poddar Group has business interests across automobiles, healthcare, media, education and real estate sectors.
