The Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) has issued show-cause notices to two residential projects along Gurugram’s Dwarka Expressway after inspections found alleged discharge of untreated sewage into nearby drains. The action was part of a larger compliance drive covering multiple high-rise housing societies to check whether sewage treatment plants (STPs) were operating as per environmental norms. Water samples have been collected for laboratory testing, while authorities have warned of strict action against projects violating pollution rules. The inspections come amid increasing concerns over sewage management, rapid urban expansion, and pressure on Gurugram’s drainage infrastructure.
The Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) has initiated action against two housing projects located along the Dwarka Expressway in Gurugram after inspections allegedly found untreated sewage being discharged from the premises into nearby drains. Show-cause notices have been issued to both projects for violation of environmental norms related to sewage treatment and wastewater disposal.
The inspections were conducted as part of a wider compliance exercise undertaken by pollution control authorities to assess whether sewage treatment plants (STPs) installed in large residential developments are functioning properly. Officials inspected seven group housing projects across sectors situated along the Dwarka Expressway corridor, which has seen rapid residential growth in recent years.
According to officials, the two projects where untreated sewage discharge was detected include Woodshire, a residential project developed by Cogent Realtors in Sector 107, and another project by Nani Resorts and Floriculture in Sector 102. During the inspections, authorities collected samples from both inlet and outlet points of the STPs installed at the sites. The samples have been sent for laboratory testing, and further action is expected based on the reports.
Apart from these two projects, authorities also inspected Heritage Max in Sector 102, Godrej Real View Developers in Sector 106, Emaar MGF’s Gurgaon Greens in Sector 102, Joyville by Shapoorji Housing in Sector 102, and Emerald Bay in Sector 104. The inspection drive was reportedly carried out following directions issued during a review meeting linked to the implementation of the Yamuna Action Plan and concerns regarding wastewater entering the city’s drainage network.
HSPCB regional officer Akanksha Tanwar stated that strict action would be taken against any housing project found releasing untreated sewage into major drains, including Leg-1, Leg-2, and Leg-3 drains in Gurugram. She indicated that monitoring of STPs has become necessary due to the increasing number of residential developments coming up along the expressway and the growing pressure on civic infrastructure.
Officials involved in the inspections also observed that while most large residential projects are required to maintain functional STPs under environmental clearance conditions, operational issues and poor maintenance continue to remain a challenge in several societies. In many cases, untreated or partially treated wastewater eventually reaches stormwater drains, creating pollution concerns and affecting nearby water bodies.
The issue has gained attention over the past several months as Gurugram authorities have intensified checks on illegal sewage discharge and contamination of drainage channels. Civic agencies have also been carrying out desilting work and drain-cleaning exercises ahead of the monsoon season after repeated complaints related to sewage overflow, foul smell, and waterlogging in several parts of the city.
Rapid development along the Dwarka Expressway has significantly increased the burden on Gurugram’s sewerage and drainage systems. Environmental experts have repeatedly highlighted that while modern residential projects are mandated to install STPs, long-term maintenance, regular monitoring, and compliance remain critical to ensuring that wastewater is properly treated before discharge.
The latest inspections indicate that authorities are increasing enforcement measures as residential density rises across the region. The final laboratory reports are expected to determine whether additional penalties or regulatory action will be taken against the projects found violating pollution control norms.
