Synopsis

Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Nashik will be organised as a technology-driven and environmentally conscious religious gathering, according to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Speaking during an industry and investment-related event linked to Kumbh preparations earlier this week, the chief minister said the state government intends to deploy digital systems extensively for crowd management, coordination and public services while maintaining the spiritual character of the event. The administration is also planning river-cleaning measures, sewage treatment infrastructure and sustainability-focused interventions ahead of the large-scale gathering scheduled to begin later this year. The event is expected to support economic activity and infrastructure development across Nashik district, including projects such as the Nashik Ring Road.

Devendra Fadnavis has stated that the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Nashik district will be organised using extensive digital infrastructure and sustainability-focused planning measures as the state government prepares for one of the country’s largest religious gatherings.

Addressing an industry and investment-related programme connected to Kumbh preparations earlier this week in Nashik, the chief minister said the state administration intended to make the event the most technologically advanced Kumbh gathering while ensuring environmental safeguards and efficient crowd management systems.

Fadnavis stated that Maharashtra faced spatial constraints in Nashik compared to Prayagraj, where the 2025 Kumbh gathering was organised across nearly 4,000 hectares. He said the government was therefore focusing on technology-led management systems to handle significantly higher footfall without disrupting the spiritual experience of devotees.

According to the chief minister, digital tools would be used extensively for crowd monitoring, coordination and public convenience during the event. He stated that the integration of technology would improve accessibility and operational efficiency without affecting the religious and cultural character of the Kumbh Mela.

Addressing concerns related to environmental impact, Fadnavis rejected allegations regarding large-scale tree cutting and ecological damage linked to preparations for the event. He stated that sustainability had been incorporated into the planning framework and said the government would evaluate the event’s overall carbon footprint after its conclusion. He expressed confidence that the final environmental impact assessment would remain positive.

The chief minister highlighted ongoing works related to cleaning the Godavari River, construction of sewage treatment infrastructure and implementation of other environmental measures ahead of the gathering. He stated that although certain difficult administrative decisions were necessary for organising an event of this scale, efforts were being made to minimise environmental damage.

Fadnavis also described the Kumbh Mela as an important driver of economic activity apart from being a religious congregation. He stated that the event represented social inclusivity by bringing together people across economic and social backgrounds within a common spiritual platform.

The state government is additionally linking infrastructure and investment initiatives with preparations for the event. According to the chief minister, projects such as the Nashik Ring Road are expected to support long-term urban expansion and create opportunities for investment across the region.

He further highlighted initiatives integrating industry participation and innovation with Kumbh preparations, including hackathons and start-up involvement, which he described as a “Kumbh-Industry Sangam” aimed at connecting multiple sectors with the event ecosystem.

The Simhastha Kumbh Mela is scheduled to commence with Dhwajarohan ceremonies at Trimbakeshwar, Ramkund and Panchvati later this year and will continue until July 2028.

According to the announced schedule, the Nagar Pradakshina procession will take place in Nashik in July 2027, while the first Amrut Snan will be held in August 2027. The second and third Amrut Snan ceremonies are scheduled for later in August and September 2027 at Nashik and Trimbakeshwar before the formal conclusion of the event in July 2028.
