Sarbananda Sonowal reviewed the progress of the National Maritime Heritage Complex earlier this week and directed officials to complete Phase 1 of the project by July 2026. During the review meeting, the Union minister instructed project teams to accelerate ongoing construction works and ensure timely completion of key interior and structural components, including mural installations, ceiling fabrication, flooring and exhibition panels. The minister also reviewed maritime conditions in the Gulf region and instructed officials to take necessary measures for the safe movement of India-bound vessels. The Lothal project is being developed as a major cultural and tourism infrastructure initiative focused on India’s maritime history and heritage.
Sarbananda Sonowal has directed officials to complete Phase 1 of the National Maritime Heritage Complex by July 2026 following a review of construction progress earlier this week.
During the review meeting, the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways assessed ongoing works at the project site in Lothal and instructed officials to accelerate construction activities to ensure adherence to the scheduled timeline.
According to an official statement, Sonowal directed project teams to expedite completion of critical components of the development, including installation of exhibition panels, mural works, ceiling fabrication and flooring activities. He stressed the need for strict compliance with execution schedules to operationalise the complex within the stipulated deadline.
The National Maritime Heritage Complex is being developed as a large-scale cultural, tourism and heritage infrastructure project intended to showcase India’s maritime history, trade routes and naval legacy. The project forms part of the Centre’s broader efforts to develop tourism-oriented heritage infrastructure linked to historically significant locations.
Apart from reviewing the progress of the Lothal project, the minister also assessed the prevailing situation in the Gulf region and examined measures being undertaken to ensure the safe passage of ships travelling towards India.
According to the statement, Sonowal instructed officials to take all necessary steps to facilitate safe navigation and uninterrupted movement of India-bound vessels amid evolving conditions in the region.
The review comes at a time when the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is overseeing multiple infrastructure and logistics projects aimed at strengthening maritime connectivity, coastal development and port-linked tourism infrastructure across the country.
Located in Gujarat, Lothal is historically associated with the Indus Valley Civilisation and is regarded as one of the earliest known dockyard settlements in the world. The proposed heritage complex is expected to integrate museum facilities, exhibition spaces and tourism infrastructure centred around India’s maritime traditions and archaeological history.
