Synopsis

The Bihar government has initiated the redevelopment process for Raxaul Airport with the issuance of a tender for engineering consultancy services related to runway and airside infrastructure development. Announcing the move earlier this week, Samrat Choudhary said the project is aimed at improving regional, national and international connectivity in Bihar’s border districts adjoining Nepal. The redevelopment proposal includes construction of key aviation infrastructure such as the runway, apron and taxiway. The project is expected to support trade, tourism and economic activity in the Champaran region while strengthening aviation connectivity in northern Bihar. The airport, which has remained non-operational for decades, forms part of the state’s broader infrastructure and regional connectivity expansion strategy.

The Bihar government has moved ahead with redevelopment plans for Raxaul Airport after issuing a tender for engineering consultancy services associated with the proposed airport upgrade in the border region of northern Bihar.

Samrat Choudhary announced earlier this week that the tender had been floated for development of critical airside infrastructure, including the runway, apron and taxiway facilities at the airport. He stated that the project represented a major step towards strengthening connectivity in Bihar’s border districts and improving access to national and international transport networks.

Located in Raxaul in East Champaran district near the India–Nepal border, the airport was originally established after the 1962 India–China war and later became non-operational during the 1970s. The proposed redevelopment is expected to revive aviation infrastructure in the region and improve accessibility for passengers and businesses across northern Bihar.

According to statements issued by the state government, the upgraded airport is expected to support economic activity in the Champaran region by improving connectivity for trade, tourism and passenger movement. Officials indicated that districts including East Champaran, West Champaran, Sitamarhi and Sheohar currently depend on distant airports such as Darbhanga for regular air travel connectivity.

Reports related to the redevelopment project indicated that the proposed airport expansion may involve runway extension works capable of supporting operations of larger commercial aircraft. The Bihar government has also initiated land acquisition processes for the project. Earlier approvals included acquisition of around 139 acres of land for airport expansion purposes.

The redevelopment of Raxaul Airport forms part of Bihar’s broader push to strengthen regional aviation infrastructure and expand connectivity across smaller cities and border districts. The state government has recently announced or initiated multiple airport and airstrip development proposals, including projects linked to Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur and proposed greenfield airports in other regions of the state.

Officials stated that improved air connectivity in the region could also support tourism linked to nearby destinations, including the Champaran belt and areas surrounding the Valmiki Tiger Reserve.
