The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has outlined a plantation plan covering 65 acres in Aarey, Mumbai, as part of its afforestation and environmental management efforts. The initiative follows a site inspection conducted in the past week by senior civic and forest officials. The proposed plantation will be undertaken after the monsoon and is intended to enhance green cover in the area. Authorities indicated that the exercise also aligns with broader environmental targets, including compensatory afforestation and sustainability measures linked to urban infrastructure projects.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed a plantation drive across 65 acres in Aarey, Mumbai, following a joint site inspection conducted in the past week by civic officials and representatives from the state forest department. Advertisement
The inspection was carried out under the direction of the municipal administration, with officials assessing land parcels suitable for plantation activity. The proposed initiative is expected to be implemented after the monsoon season, when conditions are considered favourable for sapling survival and growth.
According to officials, the plantation plan forms part of a broader strategy to increase green cover and address environmental concerns associated with urban development. The identified land parcels are expected to be developed with native tree species, in line with afforestation norms and ecological considerations.
The exercise also aligns with compensatory afforestation requirements arising from infrastructure and development projects in Mumbai. Civic authorities have been undertaking plantation drives in various parts of the city to offset tree loss and maintain ecological balance.
During the inspection, officials reviewed existing vegetation, soil conditions, and land contours to determine the suitability of the site for large-scale plantation. The initiative is expected to include preparatory work such as soil treatment, fencing, and irrigation arrangements to ensure effective implementation.
Aarey, which has been at the centre of multiple environmental discussions in recent years, continues to be a key zone for afforestation and conservation efforts within Mumbai. Authorities have indicated that maintaining ecological balance in the area remains a priority, given its role as a green buffer within the city.
The plantation plan is also linked to broader environmental targets set by the civic body, including increasing urban tree cover and improving air quality. Officials indicated that such initiatives are being integrated into city planning frameworks to support long-term sustainability objectives.
In addition to environmental benefits, plantation drives are expected to contribute to biodiversity conservation and provide habitat support for local flora and fauna. The use of indigenous species is expected to enhance ecological resilience and improve survival rates.
The civic body is expected to finalise implementation timelines and project details following internal approvals. Coordination between municipal departments and the forest department will be required to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines and effective execution.
The development reflects continued efforts by civic authorities to incorporate environmental considerations into urban planning, particularly in areas where development pressures intersect with ecological concerns.
