A severe water shortage has affected residential areas and key IT infrastructure in Thiruvananthapuram, particularly in Kazhakkoottam and the Technopark region. The disruption, reported in the past week, has impacted thousands of residents and employees, with tanker supplies being arranged to mitigate the shortfall. Authorities attributed the crisis to reduced water levels at key supply sources and infrastructure constraints. IT firms operating in the Technopark area have also faced operational challenges due to inconsistent water availability. The situation has highlighted infrastructure stress in rapidly urbanising micro-markets, where residential and commercial demand has grown significantly in recent years.

The shortage has affected residential complexes, independent housing units, and commercial establishments, including IT offices within Technopark, one of the state’s largest information technology hubs. Residents reported disruption in daily water supply, forcing dependence on tanker deliveries and alternative arrangements to meet basic requirements.
Officials attributed the crisis to a combination of factors, including declining water levels in supply sources and limitations in the distribution infrastructure. The situation has been exacerbated by increasing demand from expanding residential developments and commercial activity in the Kazhakkoottam–Technopark corridor.
The Kerala Water Authority has initiated emergency measures, including deploying water tankers and regulating supply schedules to ensure equitable distribution. However, the reliance on tanker supply has increased operational costs for residential societies and commercial establishments, particularly in high-density areas.
IT companies operating within Technopark have also been affected, with several offices facing disruptions in routine operations due to inconsistent water availability. Facility management teams have been required to arrange additional tanker supplies to maintain workplace functionality.
The Kazhakkoottam region has witnessed rapid real estate growth over the past decade, driven by its proximity to Technopark and improved connectivity. This has led to a surge in residential projects, gated communities, and supporting infrastructure. However, the current situation highlights the pressure on civic infrastructure in accommodating this expansion.
Local authorities indicated that the issue is being monitored closely and that efforts are underway to stabilise supply. Measures under consideration include augmentation of existing water sources, infrastructure upgrades, and long-term planning to align supply capacity with demand growth.
Residents have raised concerns regarding the frequency of such shortages, pointing to the need for sustainable water management strategies in the region. In several housing societies, water rationing has been implemented, with prioritisation of essential usage.
The disruption also underscores the importance of infrastructure planning in emerging urban corridors, where real estate development has outpaced the expansion of essential services. The Kazhakkoottam–Technopark belt has emerged as a key residential and employment hub in Thiruvananthapuram, making reliable water supply a critical requirement for both residents and businesses.
Authorities are expected to continue emergency supply measures in the near term while exploring structural interventions to address recurring shortages. The situation remains under review as demand continues to outstrip available resources in the affected areas.
