The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) carried out a demolition drive in Belapur earlier in the past week against an unauthorised construction after issuing statutory notice under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act. The action was undertaken by the encroachment department under senior civic supervision, targeting a structure in Sector 20, Belapur village. The property owner had been directed to remove the illegal construction independently but failed to comply, prompting civic intervention. The operation involved departmental officials, police personnel, and deployed labour and machinery. The civic body indicated that such enforcement measures would continue across Navi Mumbai to address unauthorised developments and ensure adherence to planning regulations.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) undertook a demolition operation in Belapur, Navi Mumbai, earlier in the past week against an unauthorised structure after the property owner failed to comply with a statutory notice issued under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act. The action was carried out by the civic body’s encroachment department under the direction of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, with oversight from Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Sanjay Shinde, as part of ongoing enforcement measures in the city. The unauthorised construction was identified at house number 0390 in Sector 20, Belapur village, belonging to Salim Majid Yakub Sayyed. According to the civic administration, a formal notice had been served to the owner under the provisions of the MRTP Act, directing voluntary removal of the illegal structure within the stipulated timeframe. However, despite the notice, the construction activity was reportedly continued, necessitating direct intervention by the municipal authorities.
Following non-compliance, the Belapur ward office (A Ward) organised a demolition drive on the site, leading to the removal of the unauthorised structure. The operation was executed under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner and Ward Officer Prashant Nerkar, along with Assistant Engineer Atmaram Kale and other departmental staff. The civic body deployed a workforce of 15 labourers, supported by equipment including two gas cutters and two hammers, to carry out the demolition.
Police personnel and security staff were also present during the operation to maintain order and ensure that the drive was conducted without disruption. The involvement of multiple departments, including the encroachment division and local ward office, reflects the coordinated approach adopted by the civic body in addressing violations of planning regulations.
Civic officials indicated that such enforcement actions form part of a broader effort to curb unauthorised constructions across Navi Mumbai. The administration conveyed that stricter monitoring and similar demolition drives would continue in the coming period, particularly in areas where violations persist despite statutory notices.
The MRTP Act provides local authorities with the legal framework to act against illegal constructions, including issuing notices and undertaking demolition in cases of non-compliance. In this instance, the civic body followed due process by issuing prior notice and allowing time for voluntary compliance before proceeding with enforcement.
The latest action in Belapur adds to a series of measures being undertaken by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation to regulate development activity and ensure adherence to approved building norms within its jurisdiction.
