Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) conducted an eviction drive in the Belapur division earlier in the past week to remove homeless encroachments from multiple locations, including areas beneath the L&T bridge in Sector 42, Seawoods, and Sector 25, Nerul. The action was undertaken by the encroachment department under the direction of senior civic officials, with support from ward offices across Belapur, Nerul, Ghansoli and Airoli. Belongings of those occupying these spaces were seized during the operation. The drive involved coordinated deployment of labour, vehicles, and enforcement personnel, including police and security staff. Civic authorities indicated that such measures would continue in a sustained manner to manage encroachments and maintain public spaces across Navi Mumbai.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) carried out an eviction drive across parts of the Belapur division earlier in the past week, removing homeless encroachments from key locations including areas beneath the L&T bridge in Sector 42, Seawoods, and Sector 25, Nerul. The action was undertaken by the civic body’s encroachment department under the direction of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, with guidance from Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Sanjay Shinde, as part of ongoing enforcement efforts within the municipal jurisdiction.

The operation was organised by the Belapur ward office (A Ward), which coordinated the removal of temporary shelters and unauthorised occupation of public spaces by homeless individuals. According to the civic administration, the drive focused on areas identified as encroached, particularly under infrastructure such as bridges and within sector-level public zones.

During the course of the operation, encroachments beneath the L&T bridge in Seawoods Sector 42 and in Nerul Sector 25 were cleared. Civic teams removed the temporary settlements and seized materials found at the sites. The administration indicated that such measures were necessary to address unauthorised occupation of public land and maintain accessibility and order in these areas.

The drive saw participation from multiple ward offices, including Belapur, Nerul, Ghansoli and Airoli, reflecting a coordinated approach across different administrative units. Assistant Commissioner and Ward Officer Prashant Nerkar was present along with officers and staff from the respective ward offices. Labour teams and municipal vehicles were deployed to execute the operation, ensuring that the eviction process was carried out efficiently.

Police personnel from the local police department, along with officers from the encroachment division and security staff, were deployed to maintain law and order during the operation. Their presence ensured that the drive proceeded without disruption while facilitating the removal of encroachments.

Civic officials indicated that the eviction drive forms part of a broader initiative to manage unauthorised occupation of public spaces across Navi Mumbai. The administration conveyed that such actions would be intensified in the coming period, particularly in areas where encroachments reappear after earlier interventions.

The removal of homeless encroachments in Belapur, Seawoods and Nerul adds to ongoing efforts by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation to regulate the use of public land and maintain urban infrastructure. The civic body continues to rely on coordinated enforcement mechanisms involving multiple departments and local authorities to address such issues across its jurisdiction.
