The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has expanded Metro Line 5 into one of the largest metro corridors in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), increasing its total length to 34.21 km after the approval of the 11.83-km Metro Line 5A extension. The project, estimated at INR 18,130 crore, will strengthen connectivity across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar and nearby growth centres. Authorities said Phase 1 of the corridor is moving towards the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) inspection stage and is expected to open by the end of the year. The corridor is expected to reduce travel time, improve integration with suburban rail and highways, and support industrial and residential growth across the eastern MMR belt.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has expanded Metro Line 5 into one of the largest metro corridors in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), with the total network length increasing to 34.21 km after the approval of the extended Metro Line 5A section.
Earlier planned as a 22.38-km corridor, Metro Line 5 has now been expanded by an additional 11.83 km under Metro Line 5A, significantly strengthening connectivity across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar and nearby residential and industrial zones. The total estimated cost of the expanded corridor stands at INR 18,130 crore.
Authorities said Phase 1 of the corridor is progressing steadily towards the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) inspection stage, which is considered one of the final steps before operations begin. The first phase is expected to be opened for public use by the end of this year.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the corridor would play an important role in improving transport access for Bhiwandi and the Kalyan-Dombivli belt, which are among the region’s major economic centres. He stated that Bhiwandi, known for its textile and warehousing ecosystem, and the densely populated Kalyan-Dombivli region require high-capacity transport infrastructure to support future growth. He added that the expanded corridor would improve integration with suburban rail and key highways while helping lakhs of commuters travel faster and more efficiently.
Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde said Metro Line 5 was emerging as one of the largest metro corridors in the MMR and would create a strong mobility connection across the eastern corridor. He noted that the project would support workers, traders and residents travelling between Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar while also supporting regional economic activity.
MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee said Phase 1 had reached an advanced execution stage, with station infrastructure progressing steadily. He added that preparations for CMRS inspection were underway and that the project would support the larger ‘Mumbai in Minutes’ mobility vision by reducing travel time across the region.
Phase 1 of Metro Line 5 will connect Thane to Dhamankar Naka over 11.9 km with six stations including Balkhum, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjurphata and Dhamankar Naka. The estimated project cost for this section is INR 6,741 crore. Work at the Kasheli Metro car depot is progressing, including ground improvement activities, inspection pit facilities and depot control infrastructure.
Phase 2 will extend the corridor from Dhamankar Naka to Durgadi over 10.48 km. The section will include six stations, including one underground station at Bhiwandi and five elevated stations at Temghar, Rajnoli, Gove Gaon, Kon Gaon (East) and Kongaon West. This phase is estimated to cost INR 7,326 crore.
The newly approved Metro Line 5A section will run from Durgadi to Kalyan with a spur towards Ulhasnagar. The 11.83-km elevated stretch will include seven stations at Durgadi, Khadakpada, Bhoirwadi, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Path, Shanti Nagar, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk and Ulhasnagar. The extension has an estimated cost of INR 4,063 crore and includes dedicated spur connectivity to Ulhasnagar from Bhoirwadi.
The corridor has also been planned with intermodal integration to improve passenger movement across different transport systems. Metro Line 5 will connect with Metro Line 4 at Balkhum and Metro Line 12 at Kalyan Junction. It will also provide access to suburban railway stations including Thane, Kalyan, Vitthalwadi and Ulhasnagar.
In addition, feeder bus services are planned across stations to strengthen last-mile connectivity. The corridor will also improve access to key highways including NH-160, NH-61 and NH-848.
According to MMRDA, the expanded corridor is expected to reduce travel time by nearly 40-50% compared to existing road travel. The project is also expected to ease congestion on major roads and improve connectivity to Bhiwandi’s textile markets, logistics hubs and industrial clusters.
The corridor is expected to support residential and commercial growth across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Dombivli and Ulhasnagar, while encouraging greater use of public transport and reducing dependence on private vehicles. Authorities also expect the project to contribute towards lower traffic emissions and improved regional mobility across the eastern MMR belt.
