CAQM finds road dust and construction waste violations across Ghaziabad

Synopsis

A recent inspection by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) found 24 cases of excessive road dust and improper construction and demolition waste handling across Ghaziabad. The inspection highlighted gaps in mechanised road sweeping, water sprinkling and waste disposal measures being carried out by civic authorities. CAQM has directed local agencies to strengthen dust mitigation efforts and improve monitoring across pollution hotspots. The development comes as Ghaziabad continues to face air quality concerns linked to road dust, construction activity and rapid urban infrastructure growth across the NCR region.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has identified 24 instances of excessive road dust and construction and demolition waste accumulation at different locations in Ghaziabad during a recent field inspection.

The inspection was conducted by 10 flying squad teams of the commission during the past week to review road dust levels, sweeping operations and dust control measures being implemented by the Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam. Officials found several stretches where road dust management and debris disposal systems were not being properly maintained.

According to the inspection findings, construction and demolition waste was seen accumulated at multiple points, while visible dust emissions were reported on roads lacking adequate mechanised sweeping and water sprinkling measures.

Following the review, CAQM directed the concerned departments and civic agencies to increase mechanised road sweeping, strengthen water sprinkling operations and ensure timely lifting and scientific disposal of construction and demolition waste.

The commission also asked authorities to maintain stricter monitoring of pollution-prone areas and improve enforcement of dust control guidelines across the city.

Road dust remains one of the largest contributors to particulate pollution in Delhi-NCR, especially in rapidly developing urban centres such as Ghaziabad, Noida and Faridabad. Environmental agencies have repeatedly flagged construction activity, uncovered debris and vehicle movement on damaged roads as major sources of PM10 and PM2.5 emissions.

Ghaziabad has remained under regular monitoring by pollution control authorities due to recurring air quality concerns during winter and dry weather periods. In previous inspections across NCR cities, CAQM and pollution control boards had also flagged violations related to uncovered construction material, improper debris transportation and lack of on-site dust suppression systems.

The latest inspection comes at a time when several infrastructure and real estate projects are underway across Ghaziabad and nearby NCR regions, increasing pressure on civic agencies to maintain compliance with environmental norms.

Earlier this month, CAQM enforced Stage-I measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR after air quality levels entered the “poor” category. The measures included stricter monitoring of road dust, mandatory dust mitigation at construction sites and regular clearance of construction and demolition waste.

Experts have consistently said that poor handling of construction debris and inadequate road cleaning directly affect urban air quality and public health. Fine dust particles generated from roads and construction sites are considered among the major causes of respiratory issues in densely populated cities.

Authorities are expected to continue inspections and enforcement drives in Ghaziabad and other NCR cities as part of broader efforts to improve air quality management and reduce pollution levels.
