• Indian Railways will float fresh bids for the INR 946 crore redevelopment of Vijayawada railway station after limited participation in the earlier tender process.
• The project is part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme focused on upgrading major railway stations with modern passenger facilities and commercial infrastructure.
• Vijayawada Junction, one of India’s busiest railway hubs, is planned to be redeveloped with new concourses, better connectivity, upgraded platforms, parking and passenger amenities.
• Railway authorities are expected to revise tender conditions to attract stronger investor and developer interest in the large-scale station project.
• The redevelopment is expected to support passenger growth, improve traffic movement and strengthen railway infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh.
Indian Railways is set to invite fresh bids for the redevelopment of Vijayawada railway station after the earlier tender process for the INR 946 crore project failed to receive enough response from bidders. The redevelopment is planned under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) model and forms part of the Centre’s railway station modernisation programme.
The Vijayawada railway station redevelopment project is being implemented under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, through which Indian Railways is upgrading key railway stations across the country with improved passenger infrastructure, better city integration and modern transit facilities. Railway officials are expected to revise certain bid conditions before floating the new tender in an effort to attract greater participation from private developers and infrastructure firms.
The proposed redevelopment plan includes modern station buildings, larger concourses, upgraded waiting areas, improved entry and exit points, lifts, escalators, digital passenger systems and enhanced traffic circulation around the station. Commercial development zones, parking infrastructure and sustainability-focused features are also expected to be included in the project design.
Vijayawada Junction is one of the busiest railway stations in India and serves as a major interchange point for routes connecting Chennai, Howrah, New Delhi, Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad. The station handles significant passenger and freight traffic daily and remains strategically important for South Central Railway operations and freight movement across southern and eastern India.
The redevelopment proposal has been under consideration for several years as passenger movement at the station continued to rise steadily. Indian Railways had earlier identified Vijayawada among several major stations selected for redevelopment through public-private partnership models alongside stations such as Anand Vihar, Mumbai Central and Thane.
Railway infrastructure works in and around Vijayawada have also increased in recent years to reduce operational congestion. Nearby stations including Rayanapadu and Gunadala are being developed as satellite stations to improve train handling capacity and reduce pressure on the main junction. The region has also seen track expansion, signalling upgrades and rail connectivity improvements under broader railway infrastructure plans.
Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, Indian Railways has been focusing on long-term station upgrades with emphasis on passenger convenience, multimodal transport integration and commercial utilisation of railway land. The programme includes redevelopment of hundreds of railway stations across India with modern amenities and improved urban connectivity.
The Vijayawada station redevelopment project is expected to become one of the largest railway infrastructure and station modernisation projects in Andhra Pradesh once the revised bidding process moves forward successfully.
