The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved a 4-lane Thiruvarur bypass project in Tamil Nadu with an estimated cost of INR 1,427.61 crore. The 14.9 km stretch on NH-83 will also include two Road Over Bridges on NH-129A and NH-134A. The project is expected to improve connectivity between Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore, Karaikal, and Nagapattinam, while easing traffic congestion in Thiruvarur town. It is also likely to reduce travel time and improve safety by diverting heavy traffic away from populated and commercial zones in the region.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has cleared a proposal worth INR 1,427.61 crore for the construction of a 4-lane Thiruvarur bypass on the Nagapattinam–Thanjavur stretch of NH-83 in Tamil Nadu. The decision was taken earlier this week, marking a key infrastructure upgrade for the region.
According to an official statement, the project covers a distance of 14.9 km and also includes two additional Road Over Bridges (ROBs) on NH-129A and NH-134A, aimed at improving traffic movement across key junctions.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, in a post on social media platform X, stated that the project is expected to strengthen connectivity between major industrial centres such as Tiruchirappalli and Coimbatore and port towns including Karaikal and Nagapattinam, which in turn is likely to support regional economic activity.
The bypass will originate from the Adiyakkamangalam–Thandalai stretch and pass through several locations including Athipuliyur, Andipalayam, Kidaramkondan, Pallivaramangalam, Perumpugalur, Elavangarkudi, and Anaivadapathy Colony, among others.
Once completed, the project is expected to ease congestion in Thiruvarur town, reduce travel time by around 15 minutes, and improve road safety by diverting heavy traffic away from densely populated and commercial areas.
It will also enhance connectivity with SH-23 and SH-65, along with access to the Thyagaraja Swamy Temple, supporting both transport efficiency and regional mobility.
