Synopsis

• Jaipur civic authorities issued a 48-hour demolition notice to the owner of a dangerously tilted five-storey building in the Ramganj area.
• Residents living inside and around the structure were evacuated as a precautionary measure due to fears of collapse.
• The incident has renewed concerns over ageing buildings, unauthorized construction, and weak structural monitoring in Jaipur’s old city.
• Officials warned that the administration could carry out the demolition if the owner fails to comply within the deadline.
• Similar incidents involving unsafe residential structures have previously triggered safety concerns in densely populated parts of Jaipur.

Jaipur civic authorities have issued a 48-hour notice to the owner of a five-storey residential building in the Ramganj area after the structure developed a dangerous tilt, raising concerns over public safety in the densely populated locality. The building, located in Jagannath Shah Ka Rasta in the old city area, was declared unsafe following a structural inspection by municipal officials.

Authorities evacuated residents from the building and nearby properties after cracks and tilting in the structure increased fears of a possible collapse. Barricades were placed around the site and movement in adjoining lanes was restricted to avoid any untoward incident. Officials said the narrow roads and congested surroundings could increase the risk to nearby residents if the structure collapses.

The Jaipur Municipal Corporation directed the property owner to demolish the unsafe structure within the stipulated period. Officials also stated that if the owner fails to act, the civic body could undertake demolition work and recover the expenses from the owner under municipal regulations related to dangerous buildings.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing issue of structurally weak buildings in Jaipur’s old city areas, where several residential and mixed-use properties are decades old. Many buildings in these localities have reportedly undergone unauthorized modifications or additional construction over the years without proper structural approvals.

Residents in the Ramganj area reportedly raised concerns that civic authorities should have acted earlier, as signs of structural weakness had allegedly become visible before the building tilted significantly. Local people also expressed concern about the safety of adjoining properties due to the close spacing between buildings in the area.

In the past few years, Jaipur civic authorities have carried out multiple drives against illegal construction and unsafe properties across the city, particularly in older areas where ageing infrastructure and high population density create additional risks. Similar incidents involving cracks, tilting structures, and partial collapses have previously been reported from old residential pockets, increasing pressure on authorities to strengthen structural audits and enforcement.

Experts have often pointed out that poor maintenance, additional unauthorized floors, water seepage, and weak foundations are among the major reasons for structural deterioration in older urban areas. The latest incident is expected to increase focus on regular safety inspections of vulnerable buildings in Jaipur.

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely while nearby residents remain concerned about safety until the demolition process is completed or the structure is secured.
