The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has completed a major phase of a foot over bridge project connecting Brahmand Junction and the Tikuji Ni Wadi Metro Station on Ghodbunder Road. Executed under difficult site conditions with an operational Metro viaduct overhead and heavy traffic movement below, the project involved the installation of four large steel girders measuring nearly 60 metres each. The operation required heavy-duty cranes, multi-axle carriers, and a team of over 60 engineers and workers. The authority said the work reflects the growing focus on integrated urban transport infrastructure and safer pedestrian connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has completed a key infrastructure milestone with the erection of a foot over bridge connecting Brahmand Junction to the Tikuji Ni Wadi Metro Station on Ghodbunder Road in Thane.
The bridge work was carried out under highly constrained site conditions due to the presence of a Metro viaduct directly above the corridor and continuous traffic movement on one of the busiest roads in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. According to the authority, the execution required detailed planning, traffic coordination, and precision engineering to ensure the work was completed safely without major disruption.
As part of the operation, four steel girders were installed for the bridge structure. Each girder measured 59.63 metres in length and weighed around 252 metric tonnes. The erection activity was carried out at a height of nearly 6.167 metres above the road corridor.
MMRDA stated that the operation involved the use of specialised heavy machinery, including two pullers equipped with multi-axle carriers, two cranes with 250 metric tonne capacity, one 800 metric tonne crane, and four additional supporting cranes with 15 metric tonne capacity each.
More than 60 engineers, supervisors, and allied staff were deployed for the activity. The authority said the work was executed with a high level of coordination due to limited working space and the technical challenges involved in handling heavy structural components in a dense urban environment.
The foot over bridge is expected to improve pedestrian access to the Metro station and support safer movement across the Ghodbunder Road stretch, which has witnessed rising traffic volumes over the years due to rapid residential and commercial development in Thane.
In recent years, MMRDA has accelerated work on Metro-linked urban infrastructure, including station access systems, skywalks, pedestrian bridges, and multimodal connectivity projects across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Infrastructure experts have noted that such projects are becoming increasingly important as Metro networks expand into densely populated suburban corridors.
