• Maharashtra cabinet has approved the transfer of 52,851 sq metres of government land to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for the Mula-Mutha Riverfront Development Project.
• The transferred land parcels are located in Sangamwadi and Mundhwa and will help speed up pending riverfront development work.
• PMC is expected to save nearly INR 116.63 crore as the land will be handed over without occupancy and revenue charges.
• The riverfront project includes flood control, sewage treatment, river cleaning, public spaces, cycling tracks and green zone development across Pune riverbanks.
• The project has faced delays in the past due to land acquisition issues, environmental concerns and regulatory approvals.
The Maharashtra government has approved the transfer of 52,851 square metres of government land to the Pune Municipal Corporation for the Mula-Mutha Riverfront Development Project, providing a major push to the ongoing infrastructure and river rejuvenation work in Pune.
The decision is expected to help PMC clear one of the major hurdles affecting the project, particularly delays linked to land acquisition and access to key stretches along the riverbanks. The approved land parcels are located in Sangamwadi and Mundhwa, where several parts of the riverfront work are currently under development.
According to reports, the transferred land includes nearly 11,015 square metres of riverbed land between Sangamwadi Bridge and Bund Garden Bridge, around 34,128 square metres from the Botanical Garden area in Mundhwa, and about 7,708 square metres belonging to the Women and Child Welfare Department in Mundhwa.
The state government has approved the transfer without occupancy and revenue charges, which is expected to help PMC save around INR 116.63 crore. Civic officials believe the approval will allow faster execution of pending construction and infrastructure work under the riverfront project.
PMC has already started work on the stretch between Sangamwadi and Bund Garden, where river improvement and beautification works worth nearly INR 350 crore are being carried out. However, several portions of the project had slowed due to delays in securing land ownership and permissions.
The Mula-Mutha Riverfront Development Project is planned across nearly 44 kilometres of riverbanks in Pune. The project includes river cleaning, sewage treatment systems, flood management infrastructure, embankment strengthening, landscaping, cycling tracks, pedestrian walkways and public open spaces.
PMC has earlier stated that the project is aimed at improving the condition of the Mula and Mutha rivers, which have been affected by pollution, untreated sewage discharge and encroachments for several years. Authorities have also said the project is intended to improve water flow capacity during heavy rainfall and reduce flood risks in low-lying areas.
The riverfront development proposal has been under discussion for several years and gained momentum after PMC planned it on the lines of the Sabarmati Riverfront project in Ahmedabad. Over time, the project has faced environmental objections and concerns related to floodplain impact, river ecology and construction activity near the riverbanks.
Environmental activists and citizen groups have previously raised concerns over narrowing of the river channel and possible ecological impact. PMC, however, has maintained that the project includes measures for sewage treatment, river protection and flood mitigation while also creating better public infrastructure for residents.
Reports also stated that the proposal to extend the riverfront development till Manjari Budruk has received approval after the expansion of Pune’s municipal limits. The extension is expected to bring additional river stretches under future development plans.
Officials from PMC said the latest cabinet approval will help improve coordination and speed up work on pending sections of the project. The civic body is currently focusing on completing key infrastructure works while balancing environmental compliance and urban development requirements.
