New Delhi Municipal Council has introduced a 50% rebate on parking charges for electric vehicles at its parking facilities across Lutyens’ Delhi and launched employee shuttle bus services as part of a broader initiative aimed at promoting sustainable urban transport and reducing fuel consumption.
The decisions were taken during a meeting chaired by NDMC vice chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal at Palika Kendra. According to official statements, the measures align with the Centre’s push towards sustainable development, energy conservation and environmentally responsible urban mobility amid concerns around fuel supply disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
Under the revised policy, electric vehicle users will receive a 50% rebate on parking fees at all NDMC-managed parking facilities starting this month. The civic body has simultaneously rolled out shuttle bus services for employees from four residential locations — Palika Awas in Sarojini Nagar, Palika Gram in Laxmibai Nagar, Amrit Kaal Niwas on Jor Bagh Road and Bapu Dham Flats in Chanakyapuri.
The buses are scheduled to reach designated pickup points at 9 am and depart for Palika Kendra at 9.30 am, while evening return services will begin at 5.30 pm. NDMC stated that nodal officers would be assigned for each route to oversee operations.
The council has also announced plans to expand the shuttle service network to 14 additional residential areas through deployment of 16 buses. The expanded coverage will include Palika Kunj at Mehar Chand Market, Lodhi Road residential complexes, Pushp Vihar in Saket, RK Puram, Moti Bagh and Rohini Housing Complex, among other locations.
As part of its sustainability measures, NDMC has decided not to purchase any new petrol, diesel or CNG vehicles for the next one year. Department heads and senior officials have additionally been directed to use metro services or public transport every Monday, while employees will be encouraged to adopt carpooling arrangements.
The civic body stated that officials undertaking inspections and field visits would use shared 16-seater vehicles to reduce fuel usage. NDMC has also initiated discussions with Delhi Traffic Police and Delhi Police to improve e-rickshaw and e-auto connectivity for last-mile transportation.
The council further plans to expand cycling infrastructure utilisation through its existing network of 51 e-bike stations and nearly 500 bicycles. Additional measures include promoting video conferencing, reducing unnecessary official travel and implementing work-from-home arrangements for selected departments to improve operational efficiency and reduce commuting-related emissions.
