The Maharashtra government has approved housing advances amounting to INR 1,768 crore for more than 5,400 police personnel under a state-backed financial assistance scheme aimed at supporting home purchases and residential construction. The approvals were granted through the state home department and are intended to assist serving police officers and staff in acquiring permanent housing across Maharashtra. Officials stated that the sanctioned advances cover personnel from multiple police units and departments and form part of broader welfare measures for the state police force. The move comes amid continued demand for improved residential support and housing access for government employees, particularly in urban centres where rising property values and rental costs have increased financial pressures. The initiative is expected to support home ownership among police personnel while strengthening employee welfare infrastructure within the state administration.
The Maharashtra government has approved housing advances worth INR 1,768 crore for more than 5,400 police personnel across the state, providing financial assistance for residential property purchases and housing construction under an employee welfare initiative administered through the home department.
The approvals were granted in the past week following scrutiny of applications submitted by serving police personnel from various departments and units across Maharashtra. Officials stated that the sanctioned advances are intended to support police employees seeking to acquire residential accommodation or construct homes, particularly in locations where rising property prices and housing costs have affected affordability.
According to government officials, a total of 5,436 police personnel have been approved for housing advances under the scheme. The sanctioned amount of INR 1,768 crore will be disbursed in accordance with applicable administrative procedures and eligibility norms laid down by the state government.
The initiative forms part of broader welfare measures being undertaken for Maharashtra Police personnel, many of whom continue to rely on rented accommodation or government quarters due to limited access to affordable ownership housing in major urban centres. Demand for housing support has remained particularly high in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Nashik and other cities where residential prices and rental values have witnessed sustained escalation in recent years.
Officials indicated that the housing advance facility allows police personnel to secure long-term financial support at prescribed interest rates for purchase, construction or expansion of residential properties. The scheme is available to eligible serving employees subject to service tenure, repayment capacity and other departmental conditions.
The state government has periodically expanded welfare-oriented financial assistance programmes for police personnel amid concerns regarding housing shortages and limited availability of official accommodation. Several police employees across Maharashtra continue to face waiting periods for government housing allotments, particularly in metropolitan regions where demand significantly exceeds available stock.
Administrative authorities stated that the latest approvals were processed after review of pending applications and verification of eligibility documents submitted by applicants. The sanctioned advances are expected to assist personnel from different ranks within the police force.
Housing and welfare support for police personnel has remained an important administrative issue in Maharashtra because of the large workforce deployed across urban and rural districts. Police organisations and employee associations have previously highlighted the need for improved residential infrastructure, financial assistance and expansion of staff housing capacity.
Officials stated that the approved advances would be released through designated administrative channels and monitored under existing repayment mechanisms applicable to government employee housing loans. The state administration further indicated that employee welfare measures, including housing assistance, continue to remain part of broader efforts aimed at improving working and living conditions for police personnel.
The approvals also reflect continued government focus on institutional employee housing support at a time when residential affordability pressures have increased across several property markets in Maharashtra.
