The Telangana government is set to take forward the Warangal airport project, with key groundwork now in place. A large portion of land has already been acquired and handed over, and financial approvals have been cleared in phases to support the process. The project, which faced delays earlier due to land and regulatory issues, has now received necessary clearances. Planned infrastructure includes a runway and terminal to handle regional flights. Once completed, the airport is expected to improve connectivity and support industrial and logistics growth in north Telangana.
The Telangana government is moving ahead with plans to start construction of the Warangal airport, with preparatory work largely completed. Officials indicated that the project has reached a stage where execution can begin, following progress in land acquisition and approvals.
Around 950 acres of land required for the airport have already been acquired and handed over to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). This marks a key step in reviving the Mamnoor airport, which had remained non-operational for several years. The land transfer has helped clear one of the major hurdles that had delayed the project in the past.
The state government had earlier approved INR 205 crore for acquiring over 280 acres, and additional funds were allocated later to complete the process. These approvals were aimed at speeding up compensation to landowners and ensuring timely possession of the remaining parcels. Land acquisition had been one of the biggest challenges for the project over the years.
The airport has also received the required clearances from the central government. A key restriction related to the proximity of new airports to Hyderabad’s international airport was relaxed, allowing the Warangal project to move forward. This policy change played an important role in reviving the proposal.
As per the current plan, the airport will have a runway of about 2,500 metres, along with a terminal building, air traffic control systems and other supporting infrastructure. The facility is expected to initially handle narrow-body aircraft and regional operations, with scope for expansion in later phases depending on traffic growth.
The state government is planning to lay the foundation stone in June 2026, which will mark the formal start of construction. Once work begins, the project is expected to be completed in about two to three years, subject to execution timelines and coordination between agencies.
The Warangal airport is part of a wider effort by the Telangana government to improve connectivity in tier-II cities. The state has been working on similar proposals in other regions to reduce dependence on Hyderabad and to support balanced regional development.
Mamnoor airstrip, on which the new airport is being developed, is one of the older aviation facilities in the region. Earlier attempts to revive it did not progress due to regulatory restrictions, lack of funding clarity and delays in land acquisition. The current progress indicates a more structured approach with both state and central support in place.
Once operational, the airport is expected to improve access to Warangal and nearby districts. It is also likely to support economic activity in the region, including textile parks, small industrial clusters and upcoming logistics hubs, by improving passenger and cargo movement.
