Iran starts phased reopening of airspace with Mashhad international flights

Synopsis

Iran has resumed international flight operations from Mashhad Airport as part of a phased plan to reopen its airspace after weeks of disruption caused by regional tensions. Authorities have allowed passenger flights and ticket bookings from the eastern region, while other major airports, including those in Tehran, are expected to reopen in later stages. The move follows a near-total suspension of civilian aviation after military developments in late February. While limited transit routes have reopened, international airlines remain cautious, and full restoration of operations will depend on the security situation.

Iran has restarted international passenger flight operations from Mashhad Airport, marking the first step in restoring aviation activity after an extended disruption linked to regional conflict. The country’s civil aviation authority permitted airlines to operate flights and open ticket bookings for international routes from the airport, signalling a controlled resumption of services.

Mashhad, located in the northeastern part of the country, is one of Iran’s key aviation hubs and handles a large share of domestic and international passenger movement. The airport also plays an important role in religious tourism and regional connectivity, which makes its reopening significant for both travel and economic activity.

The restart is part of a phased plan to reopen Iran’s airspace. In the current phase, operations are limited to eastern regions and selected transit routes. Authorities have indicated that airports in Tehran, including Imam Khomeini International Airport and Mehrabad Airport, will be included in the next phase, followed by western airports at a later stage once conditions stabilise.

Officials stated that the decision to resume flights was taken after reviewing operational readiness, including coordination between civil aviation and defence authorities. Airspace management has remained sensitive due to ongoing tensions, requiring close monitoring before allowing passenger flights to resume.

Iran had suspended most of its civilian air traffic in late February following military developments involving the United States and Israel. The closure affected both domestic and international routes, disrupting passenger travel and cargo movement across the country. Since then, only limited transit flights have been allowed through parts of eastern airspace.

Recent data suggests that while Iran has begun reopening, several international airlines are still avoiding the region due to safety concerns. This cautious approach has resulted in limited foreign carrier participation in the initial phase of reopening.

The reopening of Mashhad Airport is expected to gradually improve connectivity, especially for passengers travelling to and from eastern Iran. However, broader recovery of the aviation sector will depend on how quickly other airports resume operations and how the overall security situation evolves in the coming weeks.
