Synopsis

Delhi is planning a large road infrastructure push covering around 150 km, including nearly 46 km of flyovers and underpasses to reduce congestion across key routes. The projects will target high-traffic stretches such as ITO, Ring Road and airport-linked corridors. Several elevated roads, a railway overbridge and long connecting corridors are part of the proposal. Feasibility studies are underway for major stretches, including Ring Road. The plan is aimed at improving traffic flow, reducing travel time and strengthening connectivity across key parts of the city.

Delhi is preparing to expand its road infrastructure with a plan to develop nearly 150 km of road network across the city. The proposal includes around 46 km of flyovers and underpasses, aimed at addressing congestion on some of the busiest and most delay-prone stretches.

The planned works will focus on key bottlenecks such as ITO, Ring Road, Deshbandhu Gupta Road connecting Paharganj to Ajmeri Gate, Shadipur Depot and the NSG intersection near the airport. These areas currently face heavy traffic pressure during peak hours, leading to long delays and slow movement of vehicles.

The proposal includes multiple elevated corridors across important routes. Among them are a stretch from Nanaksar Gurudwara T-point to the Delhi–UP border at Tronica City and another along Shivaji Marg from Zakhira to Karampura. A railway overbridge at Kirari has also been planned to remove level crossing delays and improve traffic flow in the surrounding areas.

In addition, a nearly 20 km corridor is being considered to connect Phirni Road in Najafgarh to NH-48 near Kapashera. This stretch is expected to improve connectivity between outer Delhi and key highway networks, especially for traffic moving towards Gurugram and the airport.

Other proposed developments include a 3 km flyover on 100 Futa Road, a 10.7 km corridor between Kanjhawala and Mangolpuri, and a 17.5 km stretch from Keshopur Depot to Haiderpur. These links are expected to ease movement between residential and industrial areas while also reducing dependency on already congested internal roads.

Officials have indicated that the plan is designed to address congestion through a mix of infrastructure solutions rather than only adding new roads. The focus is on creating signal-free stretches, reducing intersection delays and improving continuity of traffic flow across corridors.

Feasibility studies are currently underway for several of these projects. A detailed study covering around 55 km of Ring Road is also in progress to identify suitable engineering solutions such as flyovers, underpasses or corridor redesign. These studies will play a key role in finalising execution plans and timelines.

The proposal builds on earlier efforts by the city to improve road infrastructure through flyovers and corridor upgrades in recent years. With rising vehicle numbers and increased inter-city traffic, such projects are being planned to manage demand and improve overall road efficiency.
