The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation intensified enforcement against environmental violations by penalising multiple construction sites across the city. Action was taken against projects in areas such as Gota, Bodakdev and Chandlodia for failing to comply with dust control norms, including the absence of green nets and improper material handling. Penalties ranged from INR 25,000 to INR 2 lakh, with some sites also facing additional action for encroachments and road dumping. The move forms part of a broader push to curb construction-related air pollution and enforce compliance under the city’s Good Construction Practices policy. The crackdown highlights increasing regulatory scrutiny amid rising construction activity and air quality concerns in Ahmedabad.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has stepped up enforcement against non-compliant construction activity, penalising multiple project sites for violating environmental norms and contributing to air pollution, according to recent civic action reported earlier this week.
The civic body imposed fines on at least four construction projects located in Gota, Bodakdev and Chandlodia, citing failure to adhere to mandatory environmental safeguards such as installation of green nets and dust control mechanisms. Penalties ranged between INR 25,000 and INR 2 lakh, depending on the severity of violations, with one project receiving the highest fine for causing significant air pollution.
In addition to dust-related violations, authorities also identified issues such as construction material being dumped on public roads and encroachments onto adjoining areas. These lapses not only contributed to environmental degradation but also disrupted local traffic movement and public safety, prompting further enforcement action.
The crackdown is part of a wider regulatory push under the city’s Good Construction Practices policy, introduced to mitigate pollution arising from rapid urban development. Ahmedabad has witnessed a sharp increase in construction activity in recent years, with the number of active sites rising significantly, placing additional pressure on air quality management. Data indicates that a substantial share of construction sites have previously failed to comply with pollution control norms, leading to repeated penalties by civic authorities.
Authorities have also undertaken sealing of non-compliant sites in earlier enforcement drives, particularly in growth corridors such as Gota, where projects were found lacking basic dust mitigation measures like barricading and netting. Such actions reflect a shift towards stricter on-ground monitoring and zero-tolerance enforcement against violations.
Officials have reiterated that developers are required to implement comprehensive environmental safeguards, including dust suppression systems, on-site monitoring, and proper waste handling practices. Non-compliance could lead to penalties, project stoppages, or even cancellation of permissions in severe cases.
The intensified inspections come at a time when Ahmedabad continues to balance rapid real estate expansion with environmental sustainability. With construction activity identified as a key contributor to particulate pollution, the civic body’s enforcement measures aim to ensure that urban growth does not come at the cost of public health and environmental standards.
