Mumbai International Airport Limited has imposed a penalty of INR 10 lakh on AI Airport Services Limited after a ground handling incident led to damage of a Gulf Air aircraft at Mumbai airport. The incident occurred earlier this month when a detached dolly struck a parked aircraft, resulting in it being declared Aircraft on Ground (AOG). The airport operator cited reputational damage, revenue loss and operational disruption as key impacts. MIAL has also indicated it may seek additional compensation for losses arising from the incident, which affected airport operations and capacity utilisation.
Mumbai International Airport Limited has imposed a penalty of INR 10 lakh on AI Airport Services Limited following an incident in which a ground handling dolly struck and damaged a parked aircraft belonging to Gulf Air at Mumbai airport earlier this month.
The incident occurred during ground handling operations when AIASL personnel were towing loaded containers mounted on dollies along the head-of-stand road near aircraft parking bays. During the process, one of the rear dollies became detached, moved in an uncontrolled manner and collided with the parked aircraft.
The impact caused damage to the aircraft’s airframe, particularly in the forward section, leading to the aircraft being declared Aircraft on Ground (AOG). This status rendered the aircraft non-operational, affecting flight schedules and airport operations.
In its communication to AIASL, issued in the past week, the airport operator described the occurrence as a major incident that resulted in reputational loss. It further stated that the grounding of the aircraft led to revenue implications, including disruption to aeronautical and related airport income streams linked to aircraft movement.
MIAL also highlighted operational challenges arising from the incident, noting that the aircraft’s grounded status created inefficiencies and constraints in airport infrastructure utilisation and capacity management at one of the country’s busiest aviation hubs.
Along with the financial penalty, the airport operator indicated that it reserves the right to recover additional compensation from AIASL for losses and damages incurred as a result of the incident. This may include financial impact associated with operational disruptions and commercial losses.
There was no immediate response from either MIAL or AIASL regarding the development.
