The Bhubaneswar Development Authority has advanced plans for a new road link between Gadakana and Patia railway station with an estimated cost of INR 77 crore. The project is aimed at easing congestion and improving last-mile connectivity in one of the city's fast-growing corridors. With rising residential development and increasing commuter traffic in the Patia region, the new link is expected to reduce pressure on existing roads. The move forms part of a wider effort to strengthen urban mobility and support Bhubaneswar's ongoing expansion.
The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has taken forward a proposal to develop a new road link connecting Gadakana to Patia railway station at an estimated cost of INR 77 crore. The project is intended to improve connectivity and address increasing traffic congestion in this part of the city, which has seen steady growth in recent years.
The planned stretch will provide direct access to Patia station, an important transit point that caters to daily commuters from nearby residential and institutional areas. With more housing projects and commercial activity coming up in and around Patia, traffic movement has increased, leading to pressure on existing internal roads. The new link is expected to act as an alternative route and help distribute traffic more evenly.
Officials have indicated that the project will focus on improving last-mile connectivity, which remains a key issue in several expanding parts of Bhubaneswar. At present, commuters depend on limited access roads to reach the station, often resulting in congestion during peak hours. The proposed road is expected to reduce travel time and improve access to public transport.
The initiative is part of a broader infrastructure push by local authorities to upgrade the city's road network in response to rapid urbanisation. In the past, the state government and civic agencies have outlined plans to ease congestion through a combination of new road links, road widening projects and construction of overbridges at key junctions. These measures are being implemented to manage the rising number of vehicles and improve overall traffic flow.
Alongside such intra-city developments, larger projects such as bypass roads and ring road corridors have also been planned to divert through-traffic away from core city areas. These long-term plans aim to create a more efficient road network while supporting future growth.
The Gadakana Patia link road is expected to complement these efforts by strengthening connectivity within developing neighbourhoods and improving access to transport hubs. The project also reflects a shift towards targeted interventions in specific congestion-prone areas rather than relying only on large-scale infrastructure works.
