Synopsis

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has requested a special grant of INR 6,000 crore from the Centre to improve Bengaluru's infrastructure, as part of an 18-point memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The proposal highlights the need to address pressure on urban systems due to Krapid growth. The state has also sought the release of pending Finance Commission funds, including INR 5,495 crore. The request reflects ongoing efforts to secure central support for mobility, civic upgrades and key project approvals in India's leading technology hub.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has sought a special grant of INR 6,000 crore from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to support infrastructure development in Bengaluru, pointing to rising pressure on the city's urban systems.

The demand was included in an 18-point memorandum submitted during the Prime Minister's recent visit to the state. The Chief Minister conveyed that Bengaluru plays a key role in the national economy through its strong presence in IT, startups, manufacturing and services, and requires continued investment to maintain this position while addressing infrastructure gaps.

The proposal focuses on improving urban mobility, strengthening road networks, upgrading civic amenities and expanding basic services. The state indicated that rapid population growth and increased economic activity have put significant strain on existing infrastructure, leading to congestion and service gaps across several parts of the city.

Apart from the grant request, the state raised the issue of pending funds recommended by the Finance Commission. This includes INR 5,495 crore in deficit grants, along with delays in the release of funds meant for local bodies and rural development. The government indicated that timely release of these funds is important to maintain financial stability and continue ongoing infrastructure works.

The memorandum also pointed out that several projects are awaiting approvals from the Centre, including key transport and industrial initiatives. The Chief Minister conveyed that faster clearances would help speed up execution and improve connectivity within Bengaluru and surrounding regions.

Karnataka has previously made larger funding requests for Bengaluru's long-term infrastructure needs, showing the scale of investment required to support the city's expansion. Despite increased budgetary allocations by the state in recent years, large projects continue to depend on central assistance due to their size and cost.

Bengaluru continues to face challenges related to traffic congestion, pressure on public transport, water supply issues and the need for better urban planning. The state government has been working on multiple initiatives, but highlighted that additional financial support from the Centre would help accelerate progress and address long-pending gaps more effectively.
