The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has approved an investment of around INR 100 crore to procure high-reach fire safety cranes following a major residential fire in Indirapuram. The decision, taken in the past week, aims to strengthen emergency response capabilities in high-rise buildings, where existing equipment has limited reach. The planned cranes, capable of accessing significantly higher floors, are expected to address gaps highlighted by the recent blaze. The move forms part of a broader push to upgrade urban safety infrastructure in rapidly verticalising residential clusters across the National Capital Region.

The decision comes after a major blaze at a multi-storey residential complex in Indirapuram, where firefighting operations were constrained by inadequate equipment reach and access challenges. Authorities indicated that the incident highlighted the growing mismatch between the height of residential towers and the operational capacity of fire services in the city.
According to officials, the new hydraulic platforms will have a reach of around 100 metres or more, enabling access to upper floors of high-rise buildings that are currently beyond the capability of existing equipment. At present, the city’s available cranes can reach only up to approximately 40–42 metres, limiting firefighting operations to buildings of around 12–14 storeys.
The procurement is intended to significantly enhance firefighting and rescue capabilities, particularly in densely developed residential areas such as Indirapuram and Raj Nagar Extension, where a large number of high-rise towers have been constructed in recent years. Officials noted that the upgrade is aligned with the increasing vertical growth of urban housing in the National Capital Region.
The move also follows a broader review of fire safety preparedness across Ghaziabad, including audits of residential societies, malls and institutional buildings to assess compliance with safety norms. Authorities have been examining issues such as access for fire tenders, installation of firefighting systems and adherence to building by-laws, particularly in high-density developments.
Officials indicated that the investment is part of a wider effort to modernise urban infrastructure in response to evolving development patterns. With high-rise construction continuing to expand under revised planning norms, the need for corresponding upgrades in emergency response systems has become more pronounced.
The GDA’s decision reflects a shift towards strengthening disaster preparedness in urban areas, particularly in cities experiencing rapid vertical expansion. By investing in high-reach firefighting equipment, authorities aim to improve response times, enhance rescue operations and reduce risks associated with fires in tall residential and commercial buildings.
The initiative is expected to be implemented in phases, with procurement and deployment of the new cranes forming a critical component of the city’s upgraded fire safety framework.
