India recorded its highest-ever peak electricity demand of over 256 GW in the past week and managed to meet it without any shortage. Around one-third of this demand was fulfilled through renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro. Solar alone contributed over one-fifth of the total power supply during peak hours. The government highlighted ongoing efforts to improve grid systems, increase generation capacity, and strengthen transmission. The performance reflects steady progress in integrating renewable energy into the country’s power mix while maintaining grid stability and supporting electricity exports.
India achieved a record peak power demand of over 256 GW in the past week, marking a significant milestone for the country’s energy sector. The demand was successfully met without any shortage, according to official data from the Power Ministry.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi stated at a recent industry event that nearly one-third of this peak demand was met through renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro. He indicated that this demonstrates India’s ability to rely on clean energy to handle high electricity requirements.
The peak demand, recorded at 256.11 GW, was achieved during the afternoon hours. A diverse mix of energy sources helped maintain supply stability. Thermal power continued to account for the largest share at 66.9 per cent, while renewable energy played a growing role in the overall energy mix.
Among renewable sources, solar energy made the highest contribution, accounting for 21.5 per cent of the total power generation during peak demand. Hydropower added 4.4 per cent, while wind energy contributed 1.9 per cent. Nuclear and gas-based power contributed 2.4 per cent and 2 per cent respectively.
The government also highlighted that the country maintained electricity exports to neighbouring nations even while handling this record demand. Officials noted that a balanced combination of thermal, hydro, nuclear, and renewable sources ensured grid stability during peak consumption hours.
The minister further explained that efforts are underway to improve the efficiency of the power sector. These include investments in grid modernisation, digitisation, and the use of technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital twins. The focus is also on converting installed capacity into actual power generation and strengthening transmission systems.
He added that generation capacity is expected to increase further in the coming period, which will support the growing demand and improve the share of renewable energy in the overall power mix. Past trends also show that India has been steadily increasing its renewable capacity over the years, with solar energy leading the expansion.
