Synopsis

Google has started construction of its USD 15 billion AI data centre hub in Visakhapatnam, marking one of the largest foreign investments in India’s digital infrastructure. The project will be developed across multiple campuses with an initial capacity of around 1 gigawatt, scalable further. Built in partnership with AdaniConneX and Airtel’s Nxtra, the hub aims to strengthen India’s cloud and AI ecosystem. It is also expected to support local infrastructure, generate employment, and position Andhra Pradesh as a key destination for large-scale data centre developments.

Google has begun construction of its USD 15 billion artificial intelligence (AI) data centre hub in Visakhapatnam, marking a major expansion of its digital infrastructure presence in India. The foundation work for the project was completed in the past week, with participation from senior government officials and company representatives.

The development is planned across multiple locations including Tarluvada, Rambilli and Adavivaram, with a total land area of around 600 acres. The project will consist of three interconnected data centre campuses designed to support high-performance computing and large-scale cloud operations.

The initial planned capacity of the hub is about 1 gigawatt, with provisions to scale up significantly over time. Once fully expanded, the facility could reach multi-gigawatt capacity, which would make it one of the largest data centre hubs globally and significantly higher than India’s current installed data centre capacity.

This investment forms part of Google’s broader strategy to expand its digital infrastructure in India over the coming years. The company is focusing on building AI-ready ecosystems, including advanced data centres, fibre connectivity and subsea cable networks to meet rising demand for data processing and storage.

The project is being developed in collaboration with partners such as AdaniConneX and Airtel’s Nxtra, which are expected to contribute to infrastructure development, operations, and connectivity. These partnerships will support the creation of an integrated ecosystem for cloud services, artificial intelligence workloads, and enterprise data solutions.

Government officials indicated that the project is expected to strengthen India’s position in global digital and technology supply chains. State leadership highlighted that the investment could act as a key driver for regional economic growth and help transform Visakhapatnam into a major technology and data infrastructure hub.

Apart from core data centre infrastructure, the project is also likely to support the development of related sectors such as power supply systems, renewable energy integration, logistics, and component manufacturing. Reliable power availability remains a critical requirement for such facilities, and large-scale energy infrastructure is expected to be developed alongside the project.

The investment also aligns with Andhra Pradesh’s broader plan to attract large technology projects and position Visakhapatnam as a leading destination for data centres in India. In recent years, several states have been competing to attract such investments due to increasing demand for digital infrastructure driven by cloud adoption, AI growth, and rising internet usage.
